Would like to hear from anyone who has actual experience in setting up a specific layout monitoring system.  My desire is for a 12 camera wireless 4 K system to monitor both ends of hidden yards and other obscure areas on a centrally mounted flat screen monitor.  I occasionally lose trains and once rear ended a parked train.

Thank you.

12 cameras at 4K resolution over wireless- something has to give- framerate/resolution/camera count.

I have a number of camera DVR installs, all wireless. One is a boat landing with 8 cameras, one is the new club 8 camera install, neither is "4K ".

12 cameras all at minimum 30 frames sec @4k- I don't know of a commercial wireless bandwidth that high- even with massive in camera compression, and that could impact latency between when the camera sees the accident and when your screen displays the now accident.

Tom,

4K Wireless with 12 cameras isn't here yet, unless you don't mind a slow frame rate as Vernon's pointed out.  When you look carefully, either live, or especially when played back frame by frame, a slow frame rate misses too many in-between frames, leaving you with stutter-stepping and/or blurred images.

You can presently get a high frame rate with about 4 cameras max in your system at the most.  Setting up three of these systems would get you your 12 but would also empty your pockets very quickly.

Don't many of the wireless systems come with a subscription cost for cloud storage?

I'm about to add cameras to the outside of my house. I'm going with wired cameras both for no subscription cost and higher security. The DVR comes with the system that I will be able to access over my network via an HDMI connection to a TV, or wireless to a tablet or smartphone. No battery replacement in the cameras either.

There are many 12+ camera wired systems on the market Tom.

I'm with @Darrell- many wi-fi enabled systems have security vulnerabilities.

@Darrell posted:

Careful with the Wyze system, they have a security flaw that allows outside people access to your network ( and not just to watch the cameras ). They have never patched it putting your private data at risk.

You might want to stop using your Wyze security camera right now! (Updated)

Apparently, Wyze finally got around to the problem.  However, given the fact that it took them years after they knew about it to address it, they wouldn't be my first choice for a camera.

Are you looking to monitor multiple cameras then you will likely be limited to security systems which likely not have the resolution you want (without spend money).  I had cameras that I could do this on a PC but they long out of production.

If you are satisfied with looking at one camera at a time then there are multiple low cost systems to choose.  I have kasa TP400 wireless 2K cameras that I can monitor using my android phone (and probably my tablet).  I can only look at one at a time but can switch quickly between them.  Unfortunately they have not released an app that will let you view multiple cameras simultaneously.

If you install a microSD card if you want to make recording which you can download (by moving microSD card to your computer).  Cloud storage is optional.

Amazon sells them for less than $30 (a two-pack is $55).

PS. A search on Amazon says that Wyze 1K cameras can be view simultaneously.

I use arlo to monitor the outside of my house, but in the past I used their wired indoor cameras as baby monitors and to keep an eye on the kids in the basement. They do require a subscription for over 5 cameras. They are expensive but good quality and many different camera options.

The only camera I have watching my layout is my simply safe security camera, but the use case you have is very different and the cameras from simply safe won't fit for what you are looking for.

I agree, even though wyze fixed their issue I wouldn't trust them.

Also I have had friends who have had issues with blink cameras, could never get them to work right.
