Hello,

I am in the second year of designing a layout for a 24x24' space.  Today I am concentrating on the staging as a yard.  I am wondering if anyone has had successful real modeling world experience using #4 turnouts and 72" minimum curve locomotives and rolling stock in a yard scenario.

Thanks,

Rob

A #4 turnout has a MUCH broader "curvature" than O-72 curves.  I put the word "curvature" in quotes, because the diverting route of a #'d turnout isn't a true curve at all.  Instead, #'d turnouts have frog angles based on the turnout's number.  The larger the turnout number, the more gradual (smaller) the angle.

Bottom line... a #4 turnout will accommodate O-72 minimum locomotives just fine in the yard.  On the mainline, #6 or #8 would be better if you have the real estate. And it sounds like you do.
