So I finally got a few switches and made a a carpet layout...It has 2 switches and enough space to do a little switching layout....about 10 feet long. Takes my Atlas Southern engine 3:26 to go from the left side end to the opposite end at speed step 1. I thought that was pretty good. I need to setup motor control for my CSX Dash 8 too. I have just enough room to do a little bit of switching. Helps pass the time. Anyway here are some pics...will try to get a short video this weekend. I have a few more engines on the way, so I can swap them out when I get tired of seeing these. Oh yeah, the "layout" is in front of my fireplace...under the TV on the wall, so I can watch TV and/or run trains...best of all worlds right now!

Looks great! What kind of track do you use for your layout?
Andy - One suggestion. You'd be well advised to put some protection (eg. Plastic) beneath that light/white carpet you have. Otherwise you'll get stains on it (and incur the wrath of your significant other).
Uhhh - I meant beneath the track to protect the carpet. Dunn!
AND...it'll keep carpet lint and pet hair from wrapping around the axles. Friend of mine brought a box of old Lionel trains he had when he was a kid, said they wouldn't run and could I take a look at them. Nothing but removing lint/hair and general cleaning and they were good as new. Heck, I still get pet hair and my layout is 36" off the floor! Can't keep my female cat off the thing. I guess she likes to watch trains too!
Thanks guys! Good idea about the plastic...more worried about the engines than the carpet. It is going to be ripped out soonish and hardwoods are coming in.
@Phoebe Snow Route Right now I have a combination of micro-engineering weathered flex with Atlas #5 switches and a few pieces of Atlas 10" straight pieces...I think the ME track looks really good, but the plastic ties seem delicate. Once down on a permanent structure I am sure they will be fine. When I buy more track I may buy the unweathered and weather it myself. I heard they aren't as brittle unweathered from factory.
Got my GN Sunset FTA&FTB units today. I like them a lot even if they aren't the normal road name I use. I need to learn a little about QSI I guess to learn how to turn off some of the lights or program different functions.
I have 4 engines on this little layout right now counting the powered B unit. Here is a quick couple of pics I took of the new engines.
