I am a novice and in the planning stages of building my first permanent layout.  Question:  Am I taking on too much to include changes in track elevations versus keeping everything on the same plane?  I recognize the maximum slope needed and have room to have a raised section, but concerned that there are other factors not being considering.  My is plan for the "up and down" loop to be basically an oval with 72 inch curves to run passenger trains with sidings on the front and back stretches.  I greatly appreciate everyone's input and advise.

You should not avoid layout plans with grades.  My first layout used the Lionel Trestle Set to create an overpass.  It wasn't until the third or fourth layout (and 10 years) that I built grades into the scenery.

So my suggestion is to use the track manufacturer's trestle set the first time.  After saying this, if your skills are up to it go for it.
