I have built a few layouts, but I never get past track..seems I see a better way and I wind up redesigning as I go along..which means I never complete the track

so I am thinking IF I have a definitive plan to follow that has been set in stone, so to speak before construction begins I might have better luck

If you have the time, and a microphone/headset, I can set up a gotomeeting session and you can show me where you are having problems and I can walk you though it with screen-sharing and voice comms.

1drummer, I have connected the track you had placed with just a few very minor changes.

Do you envision this layout being a large "loop" around the room ( drawbridge for the door way? or do you need the loop to double back on itself (folded loop) ?

Give me some guidance and some parameters, like what track make and model? what is the minimum radius curve?  Flex track ok? (if available) 

I will see what I can do.

Here is a double dog-bone layout.  I used MTH Realtrax since that what was the existing track appeared to be.  The ends are O-31 curves, this might be an issue if you want to operate engines or rolling stock that needs a wider turn.  

Also you may want to move the pool table the other end of the room. I could shorten the top dogbone then to provide more door clearance.

I want a plan in place, so that I can get past track..do scenery/scenes..and have a layout worthy of an open house

at so,e [point want to run out of train room along soffit//that will add about 100 more feet for main line runs..so levels must go up from yard level to connect to future main line...

From the top menu...

[View]->[Show Size and Area]

Just check it and all dimensions will be displayed.

Have you considered using C4?

Actually, I have a similar problem.  The room i'm using is a bedroom.  It's 10'x11' and there is an upright piano in there too.  Just trying to fit a 4'x8' layout is challenging. 

Just watched your youtube video.  I'm impressed. That's freakin huge!

Meant to ask you, I see a lot of pink foam in the video. How do you attach your track to foam?

I drill holes in the GG and use a drill

fine thread on the MTH. Due to the hole size

so track board by east and west sides of pool table on lowest level needs to be under 12"wide,

and duck under by door also

Somebody on the forums here posted some pics of where they installed a double track drawbridge over an opening to the middle of the layout so you don't have to duck to enter.

kon  I have been down that road..seems that if Im on the North side, I need to get to the South side..and the attempt to run round the 10 foot long island  is a challenge...

possibly an engine yard that only sticks out 3  to 4 feet at most..and is still in the center as this is...

What is the width of the north wall board you have here?

I took your room and added  and subtracted 

and sort of got this is the idea for the lowest level..yard..

..I see the dimensions of the lines in INCHES..but I cannot get dimensions of the "ground"  which in my case will be foam on open grid...

do I have to subtract to get the differences or is there a means to measure

like say a fixed grid size?

The same way you uploaded the SCARM file in the post above.  The process of uploading any file to the forum is the same for any file that can be found on your computer's drive.

I used your first posting and made a quickie room model of it.  There are lots of pieces to what I did so ungroup it and pull each piece off to the side so you can see what I did to get the effect you wanted.  Anyhow have fun.  It really is a cool program to play with.  If anyone is interested I will up load a pix of a project I did with it for the live steam park.  Russ

I am not getting antsy..That will not happen until I have no train tracks to run trains on...

So I worked a little more

corrected some measurements on the pool table and placement

Seems that when you want to move an object and it jumps that, that makes it harder to work with...

removed all 31R..not on my swithyard

so now that I have the basic jest of the plan on here..any improvements on the yard for prototypical train movement would be appreciated

is there a way to freeze the page..so that you can move side to side with out changing reference from small to big, or big to small?

what are considerations for a freight yard

long tracks....23 feet 3 inches corner to corner is what I have to work with

uninterrupted main lines past yard...or down the middle?

passing tracks/ run around near center or ends?

long throat to park incoming and out going trains. wrapped around other walls

3 feet wide max  5 tracks is best I can get in there..
