This is really not my idea but I saw it on an N gauge layout at a show.

My layout is not very big, so I am trying to make it as interesting as

possible. The 2 tracks are the same main line. enter from the right,

loop around and come back. Instead of 2 parallel curves, why not

a crossover. It adds some interest and gives me a larger corner

for scenery.

I'm very happy with this and thought I'd share.

Good Idea,

One other thought, instead of crossing at grade build it as an up and over. That will allow you to run two trains in the same direction with some sort of command control and not be concerned with them crashing! Adds a scenic interest as well.

Rick.

That is a good idea. You probably can't tell but those are 036 curves. I have a

smaller layout. Not enough room for the proper grade. I guess I call this my

accessory line anyway. It's intended for small switchers and trains that will pull

up to switches and back into spurs and log/coal loaders ect.

My grandson is 6 months old so time is short to get this working

I have been considering this on my future layout upgrade to increase the amount of time before a train passes the same point.

I counter the idea with a train running the opposite direction on the other track.

I'm leaning to the 2 separate loops with crossover for access by other trains.

Now if I went to 3 full loops.... Hmmmmm......

I drew up this plan a while back to use, but decided not to because it would have meant starting over:

It does make for a long mainline which is something we all could probably use.

I ended up with this and so far I'm very pleased:

If I was starting new, I would really consider using the crossover and radii larger than 054 and 072.  I used 072 on the outer line and 054 on the inner line of my present layout above, but the plan with the crossover was drawn using 090 on the outer main.  The squares are 12".
