Hey y'all.

It'a been a while since I posted on here.  A lot has been going on the past year,  which takes me back to when this build first started. Roughly a year ago I had an antique dresser that I had no use for. I had an idea to create a custom train display cabinet to display my collection. My idea was to create a cabinet that I can use to store boxes, and display my collection. I had an idea and ran with it. I purchased some old windows from a home and had a concept. (The below listed pictures are in sequential order from start to finish).

One of the biggest challenges I faced was not having the proper tools and space(like a garage) to build the case. I also did not do my research into what wood I should use and I more or less just went to Home Depot and picked things out on the fly. I also repurposed most of the hard ware and wood from the original dresser and used it in the design.

It took roughly a year for me to get the cabinet to where it is today. I used MTH realtrack because I run carpet layouts and that is what I use. I sprayed the track brown, and used Woodland Scenic medium and fine ballast(it was my first time ballasting!)Though it is not finished, it is pretty close to being done. My girlfriend will add accent lines to the cabinet to give it more of an antique look. I plan on using some scenic express girder front plates on the front of each shelf. I also plan on adding lighting to it all.

Lastly I will say there is much to learn when building a cabinet like this! I have never built a cabinet before, or even ballast track It's an ever learning process and I appreciate y'all'a opinions and advice. I hope everyone enjoys your Christmas!IMG_9528IMG_9536IMG_9537IMG_9539IMG_9541IMG_9656IMG_9687IMG_0994IMG_0995IMG_0999IMG_0996IMG_0997IMG_1001IMG_1002IMG_1004IMG_1006IMG_1007

Very nice. How wide is the display part. it seems you could have added stepped shelves to display twice as many trains....

unless you don't have that many and are not looking to buy any more?

Display part is 40 inches long I mismeasured and originally wanted the display piece to be 44 inches long. I also had to take into consideration how long the top of the original antique dresser was and use that as a base.

Some risers would make good use of the depth. Viewing and general handleing gets easier with them too.

Use some 2x4s or 4x4s on the shelves to create them fast, or built like stairs to save weight.

Track is sort of a pita if this is an often accessed shelf. A smooth shelf is my preference for running stock.. Leave extra room for bending fingers to grab cars and locos with too.

Glued or nailed hardboard/masonite on wood or foam blocks with front risers to each tier tall enough to form a rail sized lip to catch wheels...or track.

If you wanted to get creative make a lip out of track.
