My 10 yo daughter has decided for her science project she wants to do an experiment seeing how much adding cars to a train slows it down. Very cool.

I already got a go ahead to buy a 2nd 153IR to set up the timer.

So is there a timer that hobbyists use to measure elapsed time on a loop or straightaway. I thought one 153IR could be used to turn on the timer and one to turn it off. (More fun than a dopey stopwatch!)

I can weight up my passenger cars and add them one at a time and make like 5 test runs each. Got a voltmeter so we can have constant and comparable voltage.

I love my daughter! This is my idea of schoolwork!

I agree with overlandflyer on this. Having been a judge at HS science fairs many times one of the main questions we are to ask is "does the student own" the project. Have they done the work and do they understand what it is that is being presented?

For a ten year old a good old fashioned mechanical stop watch will be collecting the data at a level she could/can clearly understand and explain. She could also mention the possible variations in timing due to pushing the button, attention etc.

Sounds like a nice project and one that she can fully understand and present her understanding to the judges.

Enjoy working with her.
