I plan on detailing the piers on my MTH bridge as well. 

 

My intended method is as follows.

 

Wash the piers with dishwashing soap and water.  One of the piers has an electronics board for the blinking light so you need to remove it.  Then spray the piers with some dullcoat or some other clear flat finish.  Then with a spray bottle or a sponge type brush apply a "wash" of water, india ink, and a few drops of dish detergent.  This should bring out the details and give it a bit of a weathered appearance.  Apply additional coats of the wash until you get the desired results and re-seal with the dullcoat.
