Has anyone built one of these before?  I'm using gargraves 031 track, 042 switches, table is 13'6 x 6'6 so I have plenty of room( I believe this reverse will be 5'x8').  My concern will be engines running thru smoothly, without stalling. 20180305_112608 I will put track power on each side of the switches, plan only on running trains 72" long max thru it ( say engine 4 cars & caboose)

I would appreciate any advice

Thx

I have been looking at something similar for a corner of my layout.  The only possible problem area for you are the back-to-back switches in the center.  I don't know about Gargraves switches, but the rollers on some of your engines could possible find dead spots with this arrangement and the engine will stall.  I don't think this would be an issue with O42 switches, but it was with the back-to-back RCS O72 switches on my old layout.

Anything that can work on O31 curves should not have a problem with the S curve the O42 switches make.

I made a circle of O72 track and replaced the track where needed with O72 switches.  You could do something similar with all O42 track and switches.

Not true, A crossing would not work like the switches do. If you wanted to go in a circle, you couldn't do it with a crossing.

Of course it wouldn't, but the small circle has little play value, as this is only a piece of a larger layout. Now a double slip would provide the same function, but it complicates things too.

If he's willing to sacrifice the small circle, he can simplify the wiring greatly, thus relieving his concern as posted. I think the point of this design is the reversing capability in both directions, not the incidental small circle it creates.

That's just my take on his post, thinking outside the circle as it were.
