I wish to replace the headlamps in my Lionel 736 and 726/RR with LED bulbs.  But, they are the "screw-in" type, not the bayonet, with the little flanges on the ends, like the ones on my 25xx passenger cars.  The ones with the flanges are 1445 (or equivalent) bulbs and I got tons of those on Amazon.  Had to, because the current draw of the incandescent bulbs was so much, that I could not even start-up my dual Amtrak 505 locomotives without popping the circuit breaker on the 180 watt power brick.

Can someone please tell me specifically what type of LED bulb I am looking for for my steam locomotives?  I want to put them on static display, but the incandescents are too hot and draw too much current.  Appreciate any and all help (and if someone has a source that does not require a minimum purchase of 100, that would also be great!).

Thanks to both of you.  I knew the size / type of bayonet bulb in my passenger trains because I HAD to swap them out for LEDs.  The current draw of two bulbs per car (incandescent) and 10 cars, was about six amps (measured).  It was so high, the two Dash-8 505s wouldn't even start moving without tripping the breaker on the 180 watt power brick on my ZW transformer.  So, moving to LEDs cut that load from 135-150 milliamps per bulb, down to 20 milliamps per bulb.  Now, it runs great.  But, the 736 and 726/RR are so old and screw in, I didn't know the bulb type to even begin to look for an LED replacement.  Thanks again!

Look for a vendor called town and country hobbies that sells LED replacement bulbs for Lionel trains.  They have a large selection at reasonable prices - various voltages and socket designs.  I have used their bulbs with good results.

How is the light diffusion with their lamps?  Is it close to a normal incandescent that is pretty much in all directions except the base, or is it more directive out the end of the bulb?
