I bought a ZW-L (manual says 2014) recently with the 660+ Watts, self-contained. At the recent Raleigh TCA meet, I was shown/explained THE ZW-L setup with two bricks; so the ZW is just a controller?. Why was this done (changing from self-contained power to external bricks) ? Advantages? Disadvantages? (Before I take mine out and use it).

There is no such animal as a ZW-L with bricks. You were seeing a ZW-C. The ZW-L is an upgrade from the ZW-C. The C is no longer produced

The ZW-C is older technology. The only advantage is each channel can put out 180w with the 180w bricks x4. The L has built in meters, and is a much better transformer IMO.  The hardware alone is better as well as the components. All self contained as well.
