Just finished designing my railroad with RR track.  The track system is MTH ScaleTrax.  The room size is 14' X 19' with a 6' X 3 1/2' extension for the engine servicing facility.  The layout is modular and extends against the walls of the room.  It is 40 inches tall.  The control system will be DCS.  Turnouts are operated by Tortoise under the table motors.  All cars and locos will have Kadee couplers.  The Railroad will incorporate prototypical operating sessions.

The petroleum facility shows MTH structures, but I will be constructing my own facility using Plastruct.  The rest of the buildings will be Korber, Walthers and the MTH brewery.  Of course there can always be changes.  Any constructive criticism is welcomed.

I favor Scaletrax (solid rail, no need to bury in ballast), but the switches are badmouthed on here...Ross's get raves but are not solid rail.) Makes a quandary.  Looking at the engine terminal in the upper right corner, and at the passenger terminal?? center peninsula: Looks like there might be a lot of main line and convoluted long distance backing to get an engine out of the engine yard and coupled to a string of coaches on the peninsula, or to pick up freight cars there. (assuming

three tracks around are all on same level) Space might not exist to put a WYE into

the engine yard and crossovers very close it to quickly get engines into the peninsula

yard and off the main.  Might consider raising levels in that corner, with the yard

higher or the main passing over or under...crossings...double slip switches?... from an extension of that bottom left siding off the turntable could put engines right into that

yard.

I appreciate your feedback.  There will be a switcher parked in the yard for switching operations there, but you are correct about the long run from the engine facility to the passenger terminal.  One of the sacrifices having to be made because of space constraints.  I thought about the Wye you mentioned, but it is not a possibility, again because of lack of space.  The Gray rectangle on the layout is a small utility room.  The area between the layout and that room is walking space.
