Hello Everyone. Being new to this forum I am not sure this is the proper section for my questions. Anyway here goes. Last March I purchased a postwar locomotive and whistle car. It came with old O gauge track which I cleaned up. The locomotive did not run that well on it. Shortly after I purchased a load of O gauge track and postwar accessories, i.e. the gateman, signal tower, banjo signal and few others. All accessories work well on the O gauge track. I also recently purchased a prewar set which I really like. Everything I have is Lionel.

The problem I have been having is that I O gauge medal track is a real pain in the butt. The locomotives do not run well on them, they stop at different sections. It has become really frustrating! I have some fastrack from another set and I set it up and all train run well on it. So I am thinking of converting to Lionel fastrack. However I have a few questions first and would greatly appreciate the help.

1. Will postwar (1950's) accessories run on fastrack? I see Lionel makes an activate track section. Is that what I need?

2. I have a Lionel milk car (1950's). Should I use the activator track section?

3. Do pre and post war Lionel locomotive run well and fastrack switches?

4. Lastly, The prewar locomotive and whistle car run on either track but the whistle car will not whistle. I tested the whistle car with a wire connected to the transformer and it works well, but when on the track it does not work. I tried three different transformers with the same results. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Paul

Paul, welcome to the forum.  I'll try to answer some of your questions.

1. The answer to activating postwar accessories depends on the type of accessories you want to connect.  Could you elaborate?

The Signal bridge, banjo signal, and gateman are most commonly activated using sections of track with an insulated outside rail. This works like tubular track, electrically, wherein as the train wheels pass over these track sections, they bridge the common from one outside rail to the other insulated outside rail which is connected to the accessory's common connection.

You can either purchase 10" sections of Insulated FasTrack or make any piece be one by removing the metal strap under the roadbed whose sole purpose is to electrically connect the 2 outside rails.

There are also other ways of activating these accessories including using either homemade or commercially available infrared or ultrasonic triggering devices.

2. An operating milk car can be activated using a 6-12054 FasTrack Operating Track section.

3. Most postwar trains do work well with FasTrack switches.  Some locomotives with very large wheel flanges may have issues traversing FasTrack switches and Grade Crossings.

4. There may be an issue with the tender's center rail pick up roller or its connections that could be preventing good conductivity when it's on the track.
