Rich Melvile would normally be the first to tell you not to forget the Yard Lead.  A yard lead gives you a place to back your switcher and not foul the mainline.  Do a search on it.

Arrival and Departure Tracks (or just an Arrival/Departure Track) where trains are broken down or built.  These can be entered and exited to the mainline from both ends.

Storage tracks for sorting and storing cars.

Then you have some specialty tracks for caboose storage, car repair (rip track), icing reefers, TOFC, etc.

A small engine house for your switcher with fuel, water, and sand.

You can find articles about yard design and operation by searching the internet and this forum.

Ron045,

That was a good article, thank you for posting. Have been wondering about this myself.

You don't possibly happen to have any more of these nice little articles on rail road operation/layout design etc. tucked away somewhere, do you?
