Just joined this forum and as I am just getting back into the hobby and was a collector from the late 70s into the 90s and not an operator.  I am now going to operate and just purchased a couple of engines and legacy system.  Which I am very much enjoying with my 12 year old (on my ping pong table).  Lot to the learn being away from the hobby over that past 15 years.

Looking for any assistance/guidance (e.g. websites, programs) that I can use or simply copy.

My main priority is to be able to accommodate trains with a minimum 054 spec or a 060 curve.  I guess a main outer loop.  Currently have fastrack from my annual Christmas tree operating experience.

Basically my space that I will have will be an L shape

- one leg (bottom of L) is 5x10 and other part of L shape is 6x12.   Or use 5 x12 with a overhang on each side of 3" to accommodate the 60" curve.

Appreciate any feedback/direction.

Regards,

Jonathan

First, if you plan to create your own design and have a Windows computer, download a program named SCARM.  It is free to use (but only up to 100 pieces of track) and not that hard to learn.  Next, search online for model railroad trackplans to find inspiration.  Finally, search online for "givens and druthers."  This is a process of identifying your limitations (givens) and your expectations (druthers) to determine what you can fit and what you would like to fit into your space.

Last piece of advice: plan well before any major purchases or undertakings to maximize future enjoyment.  Example:  Depending on space available, it might be better to cut that lumber into two 2.5x10 and two 3x12 sections to run an around the area layout with wider curves.

Whatever you do, have fun!
