I've tried a loop of scale trax but I think I want to go with Ross Track.  I want to get 2 ovals, one 072 the other 080.

Are these far enough apart on the curves?

Could I eventually use four number 11 turnouts to join the loops

Who has good prices and shipping on Ross Track?

I appreciate everyone's comments and advice

Thanks Guys!

It depends on the equipment that will be used. If you're sticking with diesels and shorter (60-foot or less) freight cars, there shouldn't be a problem. However, if you're running passenger equipment at 72 feet or longer and/or big steam, the equipment may make contact.

As for where to get Ross track, give Dave at Mercer Junction a call at 724-662-1110 or http://www.mercerjunction.com

Hope this helps.

Paul

For operation with all 3 rail equipment (think a scale articulated or electric locomotive on the inside and scale passenger cars on the outside) you need to go with six inch spacing on curves.  That means O-72 inside of O-84.  Ross Regular switches will work fine for crossovers.

I second the recommendation for Mercer Junction.

I like the low profile of the scale trax but I'm a little unsure of the ties, how they are connected and the variety.  I also heard that Lionel stuff, which I only have a little of sometimes has problems cause of the bigger flanges.

Thanks, Paul, I'm trying to make up my mind. I'm beginning to think it really doesn't matter in the overall scheme of things because everyone has differing opinions and good/bad experiences with all makes. Oftentimes it comes down to price and accessibility, and sometimes availability of more track options. For example, around here it's certainly a lot easier to find FasTrack than RealTrax.

And, it's not often one can get an objective opinion from someone with actual experience with multiple brands. In actuality, it probably only matters with the switches anyway, since they are usually where problems arise. The track itself is more about appearance and price.

Not to jump in on the thread but I have a point for Scaletrax:

Folks complain about the lack of switch selection, with reason.

However, If you put ScaleTrax on 5mm Roadbed (Standard Woodland Scenics) and lay a 2mm sheet of cork (Amazon) under any Ross Switch the rails line right up.

And Ross rails are shaped like the Scaletrax rails, but are just a tad taller. The Ross ties are huge! Then again, they are real wood ties, a bit more size helps keep them from splitting when tacking rails to them.

Paul:

As far as connecting and screwing down Scaletrax, see the videos from www.toytrainsontracks.com they detail how to make a wonderful layout using ScaleTrax. You might even get the info you need from the demo clips on the website. I have the first 2, need to pick up the latest one. They also include some video of his trains running on the layout and real trains running. It's Fun to just watch those sections as well.

As far as the Large Flanges causing problems I know of only one engine with that issue and it has trouble on many types of track, especially with the switches.

Thanks Dave

All true, still thinking it through.  I'll have to look the track over when I go to York.

Thanks Russell

If you are interested in learning more about ScaleTrax at York should attend the ScaleTrax seminar at the MTH booth.  You can sign up via e-mail.  The announcement went out in the most recent MTH newsletter.

The MTH and Ross booths are not far apart so comparison shopping should be easy.

Ted:

Will the seminar be up on YouTube afterwards for those of us who can't make it to York? I'd really like to see/hear it.

Thanks.
