Hey Gang,

After watching The Lone Ranger on the big screen, I began to think back on my youthful years in Arizona: playing cowboys and Indians, my old cowboy boots, riding horses out of the Fort Huachuca corral, viewing Indian rock paintings, and visits to Old Tucson. Wanting to do some light reading before I dozed off for the night, I picked up my worn copy of Realistic Track Plans for O Gauge Trains. I've read over The Wild West layout at least a hundred times, but last night it hit me like a jolt of coffee (which I wish the cup of coffee beside me now had, since I couldn't go to sleep until way, way too late   )

Everyone likes a western, be it T.V., motion picture, old radio broadcasts, books or comics, from which a lot of inspiration can be drawn. From sleepy ghost towns to bustling dusty main streets, from the quiet church to the rowdy dance hall, from desert dunes to high vistas, from cactus in all shapes to the Governor William J. Le Petomane toll booth. We have a lot to explore!!!

This is a group participation layout. You do not have to build a layout. Feel free to submit layout plans, ideas for scenery and structures, and rolling stock suitable for a pre 1900's western town and railroad.

Criteria

Layout Size: The layout shall not exceed 5' x 10'. (The purpose of the size restriction is so it will comfortably fit inside a uHaul trailer for transportation. Who knows, maybe we will have an OGR Forum Traveling Old West show someday?

Rolling Stock/Manufactured Structures: If you submit information on a produced item, please list the manufacturer, item number and title of the product. (e.g. Lionel 6-30116 Lone Ranger Wild West Set.)

Scenery/Structure Ideas: If there is a scene or structure from any type of media, please list the media title for reference. (e.g. Governor William J. Le Petomane toll booth- Blazing Saddles)

I know I'm not the only one who will have fun dreaming of an Ol' West layout!

If anybody is serious about building old west themed layouts, I suggest they read any one the eight volumes of Railroads of Arizona by David Myrick.  Each one has a wealth of historic photos of the railroads, facilities and towns.  Each volume is about a different area of the state.  David passed away recently, so the series is done, but often you can find the series in your local library.
