I know Overland produced the GP 40 and I believe they did a GP 40-2 also, the engines were built on the same length platform unlike the SD40 and the longer platform SD40-2 [3' = 3/4" O scale] I think at some point in production over the years Overland improved their drive train, perhaps some one on the forum knows when.

I have seen the CLW GP40 a few times. There is a unbuilt kit on Da bay right now I am considering. Slap some P And D trucks in it and a pitman and oh,about 50 grand in detail parts and it would be a nice model. ( I kid about the detail parts price...but not much ) really don't have time to mess around with it but it may come to that. Anyone know where to find a list of all of overlands o scale offerings by any chance? And thanks for the inssight so far guys. It's appreciated. I find it hard to believe we don't have a GP40-2 in either brass or whatever the case may be yet. If 3rd rail does one I need four of em. Would sell well me thinks. But who knows

There are more differences between a GP40 and a GP40-2 than just a sight glass on the engineers long hood side. You also have a scale 88" nose as compared to the standard 81" nose. The rear grills are of the SD40-2 type rather than the GP 38 type. Depending on the road and you are modeling, if it's a dynamic brake equipped unit, there is the dynamic brake hatch that extends the dynamic brake side bulge on the fireman side all the way to the intake grill.

If you don't need brass, you could follow the 48 to the ft article on converting a Weaver GP38 to a

GP40-2!

You got that one dead in your sights.

I'm not a modern era guy but if you fellas want choices you'll have to support Erik and/or Scott Mann when they do SD40-2's.

Pity that SD40-2/GP38-2/GP40'2's aren't available in O scale in Kato-like quality.   These locomotives are some of the finest power ever produced and will likely run on for as long as they can be rebuilt.
