It would be nice if MTH would make this car or Atlas. I would like to have a few.

I'm hoping I can get the decals made from photos of the the OMI car and the set I have for the Pickle coffin car.

Any news on this Heinz 57 car? I am interested in building of buying one, Walters kit or brass. Decals are easy to make from modern printer. Can any one help?

The construction article in O Scale Trains was: Building a Simple Vinegar Tank Car, O Scale Trains, 2005 (Sept/Oct), 31-34.  Author was.........me.

 

 

You can download that issue of the magazine for free.  That's right, free! 

 

Plans for this car were published in the "Pickles in Miniature" newsletter of the NMRA SIG that focused on all things pickle related that included Heinz car and many other companies that were shipping by rail.  I have a set that I scanned in in S scale since the published layout in O scale was a bit goofy for the scanner.  If you're scratchbuilding that should pose no problem since you have a scale ruler in hand.

 

I think that they also published plans for the "coffin" pickle cars as well as for the 4 tub cars that came in several different gallon configurations along with roster information, lettering diagrams, and generally more information about pickles and railroads than most mortal would ever desire to be exposed to in their brief time on this planet.

 

Copies of issues of the "Pickles in Miniature" newsletter are available from the NMRA library for a nominal fee to cover photocopying and postage to all that request.

 

Kits for the coffin cars were produced by Lobaugh and Rails Unlimited.

Kits for the tub cars were produced by Hawk and then later carried by Walthers for some period of time.  No kits have been produced for the single or double tank vinegar cars that I am aware of at this time. 

 

Bob Anson had produced decals for the coffin car and in fact I got my last set from him several years ago.  Exception decals that were a joy to apply.  Not sure that the same decals would accurate for the vinegar car.

 

Of course, if you've got deep pockets, there are the Overland imports......

 

As for the 3-rail sources, I've not seen any that are accurate.  You'd be better served scratchbuilding.

 

And, while you're at it, make some pickles, too.

Somewhere recently, on the net or in a magazine, I saw plans or a kit for an small, rustic pickle plant.  I didn't think I could justify it for my modeled area, which HAS surprised me by having fruit packing houses to fill outgoing reefers with something besides beer.  I would want to model that vs. some well known brand, but after mulling it over, I forgot about it.  I have seen the kits for the cars appear occasionally.

 

A little trivia about Heinz: 

 

Henry J. Heinz founded his foods company in 1869, the same year the US Transcontinental Railroad was completed, with the UP and CP meeting for the driving of the Golden Spike near Ogden Utah. 

 

Heinz chose his famous "57 Varieties" logo when he was already producing well over 60 food varieties.

 

He liked the combination of the 5 and the 7, which he claimed was the most pleasing pairing of any of the 10 numerals in use. 

 

I selected a font like Heinz used and paired dozens of combinations of numerals, and sure enough, the 5 and the 7 were the most pleasing to my eye when paired together!

Hey Martin!

I am going to attempt the Vinegar Car. I plan to scratchbuild the flat car underneath. Is it okay to make it a 40' truss rod car, or were the vinegar cars later than that?

Guess I should post these:

 

Somewhere I have seen photos of pickle cars other than Heinz.  I have heard there

were pickle processors in Wisconsin.  I'd be curious as to other states across the

U.S. where pickles were processed, in bulk, or packed.
