Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. Lifelong railroader (electrician, general foreman, supt motive power, bla bla bla) And lifelong “foamer” and model railroad collector. Most of my life I collected HO and over the years had numerous layouts, none of which were very good. About 10 years ago I started slowly collecting O gauge MTH locos and cars. Until last month none of them ever saw power, they just rotated around the house in various static displays.

Our house has/had a dedicated home theater that was used quite often. Well, the last of the kids is on his way out and the theater has sat stagnant for the past year so it’s coming down and being sold off. This leaves me with roughly 21x21 feet of usable space to do whatever I want with, so Im thinking about finally setting up a nice O gauge layout.

Last week I bought a 50-1003 rev L TIU and the newest controller. Set up a test track and got the locos registered in and working. My 2 favorites are my 4-8-8-4 MTH premier Big Boy and my DD40X. Looking like I’ll be going with minimum O -72 curves which shouldn’t be a problem with the room I have. That’s the point where I hit a wall and absolute mental block. I have some graph paper and am doing some sketches, but am scouring the forums for ideas.

Anyways, just a quick intro and hello. I hope everyone had a great Christmas.

A hearty welcome to the wonderful O Gauge Railroading family David.

You'll find there's lots of neat stuff here that's provided by a great bunch of dedicated model railroaders on this site.  When I decided to resubscribe to OGR, this time around I took out a Digital Subscription instead of the print edition.  It always contains added pages not found in the print edition.  A real bonus it is indeed!  Perhaps you'll consider taking out a DS too?  Take it from one who knows, you won't regret it!

All aboard for the ride of your life.

Night descends Having been an H.O. guy before (I'll bet you're too hard on yourself re: your former attempts at layouts), maybe you can lay all that aside and just ask yourself what do you really want to see on your layout? One of the real gifts of O gauge is the size, of course, but another one is how serious do you want to be about it? I think a few guys are really just H.O. guys at heart working double-size, and while there's nothing wrong about that, it belies one of the freedoms O gauge offers. It's really too big to run completely scale-size curves and trains - even 072 or 096 in the real world would send trains off the track, so why not enjoy the difference? Is it about running trains or scenery creation or having some cool operating accessories or day-to-night lighting, etc.? Maybe a little of each? You can do this Just For You, and that's what it ought to be. Don't be pushed around by guys who try to get you to fit into one pattern by shaming the rest of us who don't like to create "reality" in scale. Many of us love trains because it's a getaway from reality!

Greetings David!

I just came back to the hobby after several years' hiatus. I've started putting the layout together just this week.

This is a great group of folks. The only downside, is it's "virtual." I prefer being around people face to face.

I have a modest On30 layout and live at the foot of the great Tehachapi Loop.

Great to "see" you!!!

ALAN

Howdy,

Definitely welcome aboard. You sound a lot like me about 15 years ago when I just hung up the HO and all the attitudes of local modelers.  Just keep the operating sessions with the rules up the wazoo. Let me run my trains and enjoy.  But I have kept the HO modeling techniques learned over the years and applied them in the 3 rail world when I cared to. You will get a lot of good information and some opinions on this and other forums. Just enjoy the hobby!

Hi David- Welcome to the forum. I joined a little over 4 years ago when I decided to build a layout. Similar story to yours, I grew up with HO trains and am now running O. There is an old saying around here...

"Your railroad, your rules" Do what you like without regret.

Sounds like you've got a nice collection of power and rolling stock ready to run. Do some searching for layout plans to get some ideas. Do you like to watch trains run or would you rather do switching, and operating? Most guys say that giving your trains a purpose keeps the interest up. Looping can get boring after a while.

Keep us posted as you get started. You can start a layout build thread and post your progress there. Lot's of constructive advice will come from the comments you receive.

Welcome aboard! I still have a 4x8’ HO layout, but I don’t run trains too often. I also have a 5x9 O gauge, 3 rail layout, and run trains most every day! As a matter of fact, I plan on adding to it this winter! It’s more of a Hi-rail layout, using scenic techniques I learned building several layouts. Lots of fun!

Great stuff. Gives me lots to think about. Never thought of it much before but I think I much prefer the running of trains as to switching. I do not however want one train stuck on a track as I think that would get old quick. I most definitely want a double line that follows each other for a good portion but I don’t want them parallel the entire time. I may just start a build thread as suggested and go from there. Didn’t think it was right to start a build thread without anything to build yet but sounds like I should.

A recommendation ...

Discard the graph paper and purchase ANYRAIL software to do your track planning. Let your PC do the work!  Other hobbyists prefer SCRAM software; it's very good.

I had tried xtrkcad or whatever and gave up because it was not at all user friendly and at that point assumed graph paper would be the only way to go. Turns out Anyrail is amazing. Thank you.

David

I used ANYRAIL to design several club layouts and my current home layout, as shown in the attachment.  There are software programs with more "bells and whistles," but IMHO those features are overkill. My layouts aren't THAT complicated!

Tried SCARM as well but don’t like it. Really enjoying anyrail and ran out of “free” track in about 5 minutes so bought the full version. Love that I can have a grid with 24x24 squares. Next I need to figure out how to add in a few walls and obstructions so I can be sure track goes only where it physically can.
