Purpose of the layout is to do some switching and run some freight trains around the layout. I may at some point put an elevated track over this and run trains around the loop. I just want to have some fun, build some industries and try for as much scenic realism as I can. Any guidance is greatly appreciated. By the way I would be using Ross Track and switches. Thanks for your time.

This should have been posted in the layout design forum so we moved it there. PLEASE become familiar with the different sub-forum categories.
Got it. Sorry about that.

There are two reversing loops but only work for trains running in the clockwise direction. There is no reversing loop if running in the counter clockwise direction. Can you rework one of the return loops?
Your layout has room for two independent loop tracks, but you only have one complete loop. I have two loop tracks for when I just want to run my trains, especially in opposite directions so the pass each other. I recommend you relook the area I circled to see if you can have two independent loops.

Ron makes two excellent suggestions....sometimes, you just want to let 'em run.....
Peter
I you agree with the two independent loops, and a long passing siding for each loop so you can have a train in waiting. plus a yard for storing engines and various consists. Maybe a double crossover to connect the two loops.
Guys - Based on Ron's suggestion, I reworked the entire thing(please see attached). I'm dealing with a basement that I'm weaving in and out of obstructions but I think I met all of your suggestions. You made me think that I should get my two independent loops established and be able to reverse direction when I want although I must use the inner loop to reverse direction on the outer loop. I'm trying to keep the curves as wide as I can. I think I have enough room to add sidings, industries etc. Dave - I'll work on the long sidings next but I wanted to get the basic multiloop established and see what is left over. Thanks to you all for your time and guidance.

It looks like you've only got access from two sides and a long reach. Are you planning access hatches?
Hi Scotie. Yes. Once I nail down the track plan, proper benchwork and access hatches will be constructed. Thanks
I think you will really enjoy the long runs and you got the reverse loop included too!
Looks great, the long runs will be fun for big trains. For the next step, don't skimp in the sidings, I think it's almost impossible to have too much siding space!
Thanks John - Will do. Once i install and troubleshooting is complete for this initial build, my plan was to start on sidings, industries etc, while the trains are running(yeah!!).
The new design has a nice flow to it. The inner track has a few route options now. Nice job!
Thanks Earl - Based on the feedback, I think I'm ready to get the benchwork completed for this track plan. I'm ready to buy the track(gulp) and get started with putting it down.
Your track looks very close to the black boxes (structural support posts) on your diagram. You need some room for overhanging equipment. I suggest double checking your clearances around your structural support posts, unless you already factored that in when drew them on your plan.
Thanks. It has been factored in. Its funny the way I went down and measured 100x each hoping that the previous night the basement Gods would make more room for me.

With a 40 foot width there, I think the basement Gods were pretty generous, I wish they had come to my place!
