My wife is asking me for Christmas ideas . . .

Does anyone use a portable Helping Hands type device that you would recommend (or not recommend)?

I looking for something to hold items in place to do things like soldering 2 wires, holding an electronics board, any small item, etc.  One that also has a small vice might be nice.

But I need one that mounts temporarily, such as:  It's mounted on a bar clamp that I can clamp to my workbench, and then remove.

Also, do many of you use a parts washer of some type?  Ultrasonic or something else?  Again, possibly not just using it for this hobby.

Also, if you have any other tools (hobby or simply general garage tool)  that you find very useful, that I might not have thought about, please let me know.

Thanks,

I buy some supplies from Micro Mark. I always buy one hand tool I really don’t need at the moment seeing I’m already paying the shipping. A good way to build up your tool collection. I’ve bought some duds but I like this tool. Takes a bit to setup. But once locked in place it works well for soldering. Provided your at the workbench. I usually weight the end to get it up off the bench and give you room to solder.

I have a basic alligator clip tool. It has a weighted base that stays in place pretty well. I've found that the teeth on the clips can dent soft wires so I use a piece of shrink wrap if necessary.

I like the one that @rplst8 has. Sometimes having more than 2 clips comes in handy.

Other ideas would be a digital caliper and wheel puller if you need.

If you don’t find one elsewhere, American Science and Surplus always has decent ones at good prices (sciplus.com.) They also have a big stock of watch repair tools that are great for a whole lot of uses other than watches.

Fire Mountain Gems has higher-end tools of all kinds. Buying from a jewelry supply house may sound strange, but think small, precise work.
