Hello folks,

I've been doing preliminary research into a temporary layout, and I'm mostly concerned with sound suppression. Based on my research here on the forum, Homasote seems to be the material of choice. However, I can't seem to find it anywhere, and it's website has disappeared. Does anyone know if this stuff is still available? If so, where? If not, any recommendations for an alternative solution?

All I really need is something to suppress the noise generated by running traditional track (in this case, Menards) on a 1/2" OSB base. To that end I'm also considering using some type of laminate flooring underlayment, or carpet pad, directly under the tracks; again, this is just a temporary setup, track only, for equipment operating purposes only.

Thanks in advance!

I looked on the Home Depot website and this is the product description for Soundboard.

“Use the Homasote 1/2 in. x 48 in. x 8 ft. 440 Composite Sound Board to help improve sound insulation in your next construction project. This board is made of an environmentally friendly composite material. Made to guard against termites, rot and moisture.”

So in other words Soundboard IS Homasote??

I bought Homasote at our local Menards about a month ago. I have used it for nearly 50 years. I do not think I would use it as you plan. The stuff is heavy, and not easy to move around, if it is for a temporary layout. How about using the thick foam insulation board that has a firm backing on one side. It sure would be easier to move around when the time comes.

I wonder why their website is not available? Handy for locating suppliers in the past.

Hi folks, thanks for all the responses. Glad to know it's still available if I just look in the right places. Mowingman, you are correct, after further review I determined that it would not be appropriate at this stage, as I will be knocking it back down in a few weeks.

To recap, All I have right now is an 8ft linear test track and a very small O27 oval, and I want something more expansive to experiment with some ideas I have. The new temp layout will be up for maybe two months tops, while my garage is undergoing an expansion project (for my other hobby, lol). So yesterday I got three 4 x 8 sheets of 1/2" OSB (which were left over from the garage project) and secured them together end-to-end on the ramps of my 4-post car lift to form a 12 x 8 platform. Went to Big Orange (Home Depot) and found a nice thin indoor/outdoor brown 12 x 10 carpet remnant for $40, and clamped it in place on top of the OSB. Now I have exactly the kind of temp surface I need to lay some track. Simple, cheap and easily disassembled. Not to mention I can raise it out of the way when not in use. I'll follow with some pictures in a new thread after I lay some track down.
