I envy you guys with big basements. My basement measure 8' x 20' and is filled with mechanical equipment ( A/C, water heater & boiler ), so not much room for a layout. My present plans are to build a shelf layout in my garage, 20' x 24'. It will run around the perimeter only. Maybe some day, the garage attic will become available. I just have to get youngest daughter to buy a house of her own and get all the stuff she's going to furnish it with out of my attic.
Where did you get your homasote from?

Dan,
I have the same concept of an around the room layout. Take a look at my recent posts, I'd like your opinion.

A fine start, looks like a bunch of fun ahead.
Yes, looks like a great start to the new year. Good luck finalizing your track plan so you can get to track laying. Sounds like a good deal on the Homasote too.
As a FYI to others, I was in our local Lowes a week or two ago and they had a bin of Homasote. I forget the price and it looked a bit 'lumpier' than I remember Homasote looking? Seems like it had a pretty smooth surface years ago? Anyway, thought I would mention this because I looked everywhere for it a few years ago and only one lumber yard here had it at $42 a sheet and $50 delivery charge.
Homasote runs vary skid to skid.
Lowe's & HD Homasote can be bowed due to the sloppy way the stack it on bent rack fingers. Try to buy where it is stored on flat beds. Otherwise, leave big box potato chip style Homasote lie flat for a while.
After I run a Porter Cable #333 vacuum equipped sander with 100 paper, I skim coat Homasote with a Portland feather finish and 14" straight trowel. I sand all cut edges top and bottom. Clean vac filter outside, wear a mask.
Homasote cuts made with an Airway #6 knife.
No dust with hand razor cuts. The Airway blade is half the size and half the thickness of a Stanley blade but twice the sharpness with half the life.
Cuts circles easily. 4 to 5 passes does the job. First pass just scratch the line, then let the knife dive down into the material.
Available at floor covering supply houses
You are exactly right about the Lowes stack job on the Homasote, I forgot to mention that it was all bowed pretty badly. Guess I was so surprised I saw it there I forgot the bad parts. I haven't yet seen it at Home Depot here, but I will take a good look next time I am there.
You always have some very good tips and tools for working with all these things too. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Paul,
I think one of the most exciting times when building a layout is the day the table top goes on. Good luck with the build

Rob, I'll post an opinion on your thread.
Go slow b/4 you rush to install the decking.
CONSIDER: Plan out your wiring well ahead of time so you can drill out wire management holes under where all the main lines will be and rough in a prewire job as much as you can. So much easier bending down threading long runs than hobbling underneath trying to reach up and thread through predrilled holes in the cross members. Then install the deck.
