Hi Guys - has anyone had any experience using "Railmodeller" track layout software??  I found it doing a search on the web - I use an Apple MacPro and have had a hard time finding a viable layout software program for the Mac.  I read a lot of positive comments about it on the web but would like to hear from my friends on the forum.

Paul,

I have used Railmodeler on my MacBook Pro for a couple of months now and generally like it. It is easy to learn and has the FasTrack library. The only negative that really bugs me is that I have not found a way to move a group of tracks as one unit. If you have a group of tracks you want to move you have to move each piece individually. Maybe someone else will chime in.

I also have been using RailModeller for the mac and find it useful for layout planning. If you have a group of track you want to move as a unit, select the group of track by holding down the shift key and clicking on each track piece you want to move or select them as Al explained. Once you have the section of track selected go to the "Element" menu and select the option to "Group" and that grouping of tracks will be treated as a single element and can be moved wherever you want. You can rotate the section to whatever orientation you need using the "Rotate" command. You can also copy and paste it to create a duplicate section of the same group of tracks which is very handy if you are creating reverse loops etc. If you want to modify that "group" just select it and go back to the "element" menu and choose the "ungroup" selection and you can once again treat those track pieces as individual elements again.

Hope this helps

BTW, another nice feature of RailModeller is that you can export your layout idea as a SLIF file and import it into an application called "IRunTrains" and test your layout features for reversing loops etc. I have found it to be useful in working the bugs out of layout ideas before trying to implement the layout in real life.

Here is a link to the iruntrains site for more info. The app (iruntrains) is free to use so that is another nice bonus.

Thanks for the advice Mike.

Hey Mike - I just downloaded what I think is a "trial" download for Railmodeller from the link below.  It was somewhat difficult to bring up on my computer as it wanted me to transfer the Railmodeller folder into my Applications file.  Once that was done I was able to open Railmodeller but couldn't use all the tools that are available with it - therefore I'm assuming that this was a trial download.  I believe it cost $39 for the "real" download - still a great bargain - lots of the guys found it to be a good program.

Let me know how you do and if you find out anything new.

The demo won't let you save and if I remember some other features are disabled. Good to get a feel for the program at least. Once you buy the program all features are available including the ability to input all of your track inventory so that when you are laying out a course you can go to the parts menu and it will list everything currently being used for that layout and if you choose just the parts you need that are not in your current inventory-I think that is a nice feature.

And as Darrell stated below-once ready to buy just click on the purchase choice in the menu-they personalize your activation key based on your name and address and then e-mail you the code to unlock it. It works well and is pretty straightforward to unlock. Good luck and feel free to throw any questions out about the program once you start using it.

Not sure what that means either. I went to the website and clicked "Buy" and got the same message. Maybe they are not currently available-but definitely odd to say the least.  I guess keep trying periodically and maybe it will be working again.

Is there another way of downloading?

I was trying to remember how I registered mine also and I think that I did the same thing-from the preferences or the "about" menu -just not sure which one it was. I think maybe the developer is curently unavailable, if that makes any sense??

Either way, I have not run into that message ever before when trying to purchase the license code for software of any type. It just seemed odd?

Found this in the manual:

RAILMODELLER can be purchased online at the Kagi e-commerce store. To pay the shareware-fee of EUR 29, or US $ 39, via KAGI please visit

 http://order.kagi.com/?1RN&lang=en
You will receive a personalized license key unlocking the demo version via email.

Please note that your personalized license key will be created manually. Unfortunately it is currently not possible to instantly ship the keys. You will receive your license key within the next 48 hours, but usually much faster.

The information you supplied at Kagi will be used to create your personal license key. If you need to correct or complete the registration information (name, ad- dress, etc.) you can send an email to contact@railmodeller.com with the updated data immediately after purchasing the program at KAGI.

Please note that license keys cannot be updated once delivered to you.

Ok guys - I haven't had the least bit of success downloading "Railmodeller".  At first I was able to download the trial but couldn't go any further.  I even went to an Apple store and they couldn't download the program.  I found out that they are having problems with g mail accounts through an Railmodeller forum.  Apple suggested I start from scratch - after trying again to download the trial, as Darrell recommended, no can do.  Here's my question:

1. Is it necessary to download the trial program prior to purchasing the "actual" program?

2. If not I I'll try Darrell's recommended website because I see no "trial" download link on that webpage.

Paul,

I just went to the given site and downloaded the "Demo" on my MacBook Pro. I tried a few pieces of track and everything seemed to work okay. I was disappointed to see that they did not have Gargraves track as an O option. I might guess that Atlas and Gargraves have the same footprints? I will wait to purchase the full version.

Rick

Darrell - I tried the download link on the website.  A window appears and it states that the Railmodeller file has to be placed in the "applications" file of my computer.  Then I tried dragging the file into the applications file and it keeps getting rejected.

I'll try the link you just sent me.

Thanx again for your patience.
