Hi Guys - has anyone had any experience using "Railmodeller" track layout software?? I found it doing a search on the web - I use an Apple MacPro and have had a hard time finding a viable layout software program for the Mac. I read a lot of positive comments about it on the web but would like to hear from my friends on the forum.

Paul,
I have used Railmodeler on my MacBook Pro for a couple of months now and generally like it. It is easy to learn and has the FasTrack library. The only negative that really bugs me is that I have not found a way to move a group of tracks as one unit. If you have a group of tracks you want to move you have to move each piece individually. Maybe someone else will chime in.
I have used Railmodeller for several years and find it easy and accurate. To move a group of tracks use the dotted box tool(select elements) to select the tracks then use the arrow tool ( select and create elements) to move them.

I also have been using RailModeller for the mac and find it useful for layout planning. If you have a group of track you want to move as a unit, select the group of track by holding down the shift key and clicking on each track piece you want to move or select them as Al explained. Once you have the section of track selected go to the "Element" menu and select the option to "Group" and that grouping of tracks will be treated as a single element and can be moved wherever you want. You can rotate the section to whatever orientation you need using the "Rotate" command. You can also copy and paste it to create a duplicate section of the same group of tracks which is very handy if you are creating reverse loops etc. If you want to modify that "group" just select it and go back to the "element" menu and choose the "ungroup" selection and you can once again treat those track pieces as individual elements again.
Hope this helps
BTW, another nice feature of RailModeller is that you can export your layout idea as a SLIF file and import it into an application called "IRunTrains" and test your layout features for reversing loops etc. I have found it to be useful in working the bugs out of layout ideas before trying to implement the layout in real life.
Here is a link to the iruntrains site for more info. The app (iruntrains) is free to use so that is another nice bonus.
Thanx, fellas - since all 3 of you gave favorable reports I'm going to purchase the software on line (if I can). If you have a suggestion on the best website to buy it let me know -
Thanx again!!!
Been using it for years for both my train layout and my slot cars, like it a lot.
Been using it on an iMac for about 6 months, with great results. Very stable. Lots of good tips above - thanks!

Hey guys, thanks for the info. I've been looking for a program since I switched to a iMAC a little over a year ago. I just checked their site, is there a free version and a version to purchase? I cannot find a price, how much is it and is it a one time cost?
Mike
Hey Mike - I just downloaded what I think is a "trial" download for Railmodeller from the link below. It was somewhat difficult to bring up on my computer as it wanted me to transfer the Railmodeller folder into my Applications file. Once that was done I was able to open Railmodeller but couldn't use all the tools that are available with it - therefore I'm assuming that this was a trial download. I believe it cost $39 for the "real" download - still a great bargain - lots of the guys found it to be a good program.
Let me know how you do and if you find out anything new.
Go to http://www.railmodeller.com and download the trial. When ready to buy click on the dollar symbol in the menu bar to purchase the license key. I have updated the program 8 times since I bought it, none of which have cost anything.
Thanks guys.
Mike

And as Darrell stated below-once ready to buy just click on the purchase choice in the menu-they personalize your activation key based on your name and address and then e-mail you the code to unlock it. It works well and is pretty straightforward to unlock. Good luck and feel free to throw any questions out about the program once you start using it.

Once again the OGR members have been a priceless resource! Thanx to all of you for your help, advice and tips - I'm going to purchase the software today.
Tried to download Railmodeller from their website today - no can do.
After clicking on the "Buy" link it tells me "Will be back soon....."
Is there another way of downloading?

ok, when I paid for mine years ago I did it thru the program, not the website. There should be a spot in the preferences to enter the license key. If I remember correctly it will give you the choice of entering the key location or to purchase one. I also believe the dollar sign in the menu bar can be used to buy the key also.

seems odd indeed...
Found this in the manual:
RAILMODELLER can be purchased online at the Kagi e-commerce store. To pay the shareware-fee of EUR 29, or US $ 39, via KAGI please visit
http://order.kagi.com/?1RN&lang=en
You will receive a personalized license key unlocking the demo version via email.
Please note that your personalized license key will be created manually. Unfortunately it is currently not possible to instantly ship the keys. You will receive your license key within the next 48 hours, but usually much faster.
The information you supplied at Kagi will be used to create your personal license key. If you need to correct or complete the registration information (name, ad- dress, etc.) you can send an email to contact@railmodeller.com with the updated data immediately after purchasing the program at KAGI.
Please note that license keys cannot be updated once delivered to you.
Darrel - how do you register through the program when you can't download it?
Do you first have to download the trial demo first and register through that?
Yes, download the demo. See my last post, follow the link in it. They will send you the key, then in the programs preferences there is a place to enter the key to unlock all the features.
Ok guys - I haven't had the least bit of success downloading "Railmodeller". At first I was able to download the trial but couldn't go any further. I even went to an Apple store and they couldn't download the program. I found out that they are having problems with g mail accounts through an Railmodeller forum. Apple suggested I start from scratch - after trying again to download the trial, as Darrell recommended, no can do. Here's my question:
1. Is it necessary to download the trial program prior to purchasing the "actual" program?
2. If not I I'll try Darrell's recommended website because I see no "trial" download link on that webpage.
You need the trial version, the key that you buy just unlocks all the features.
Are you trying the download link at the website, not the buy link?
I also have gmail, no problems ever with the two for me.
I just went to the website and was able to download the program with no problems.
Here is the direct link to the program : Download RailModeller 4.1.6
Paul,
I just went to the given site and downloaded the "Demo" on my MacBook Pro. I tried a few pieces of track and everything seemed to work okay. I was disappointed to see that they did not have Gargraves track as an O option. I might guess that Atlas and Gargraves have the same footprints? I will wait to purchase the full version.
Rick
Paul,
I just tried this (even though I'm not going to buy it yet, nor was I even going to download the demo yet) to see if itd work for me. If you click the link that Darrell supplied and follow the directions, it will work
Mike
Darrell - I tried the download link on the website. A window appears and it states that the Railmodeller file has to be placed in the "applications" file of my computer. Then I tried dragging the file into the applications file and it keeps getting rejected.
I'll try the link you just sent me.
Thanx again for your patience.
Paul,
When you download the link and it says to copy to the applications folder, select the Railmodeller folder shown, use Command + C on your keyboard, then select the applications folder (in the window shown) and use Command + V. That will copy the folder and paste it into the applications folder.
Mike
OK - I had success with downloading the demo from Darrell's site - the demo worksheet came up and I was able to play around a bit with the track - but I see no further directions - am I missing something?????
Somebody else will have to jump in. I didnt look at it that closely. I only attempted the download to see if I could help you any in getting it downloaded yourself
Goodluck!
Thanx Mike - at least I'm half way there!!
Good info, I was wondering the same thing.
John.
Ok, wait.... I just looked
Go into your Applications folder
Select Railmodeller 4.1.6 folder
Select Links
You will find "purchasing railmodeller" there
BUT.... when I get to the "buy" screen on there site it says:
Thanks for your interest in RailModeller!
We will be back soon..
Mike - ok, I did what you said - went to Links then to Purchase Railmodeller - I got the same response "Thanks for Interest.......etc." "Be back soon...."
That's when I went to the Railmodeller forum and found that they were having a problem with g mail accounts -
If I find out anything new I'll post
Sounds good. I'm glad you got it to that point!
I would suggest using the Ross track file over the Atlas file if you plan to actually use Gargraves track on your layout. A significant number of folks use the Ross switches because they go well with the Gargraves and the track is very similar to Ross.
