Can someone post some pictures on how to replace the motor unit with a double reduction unit. I have a double reduction  motor unit from a 490 engine to use for the conversion. Any help will be useful. Also how do you remove the pin holding the drive rod to the driver. Thanks for any help. Charlie

I'm about to do a similar swap, adding a smoker to a single reduction motor. The pin n is actually part of the wheel and does not get removed. On the Marx trains Yahoo group I found that you need to either squeeze the flared end of the pin around it's diameter to reduce the flare enough to pop off the rod, or use a file to remove the flare. Once the new rod is in place, use a tool like a nail set or small punch, and with a hammer flare the end of the pin out again. I think I am going to try the squeeze option first so I'm not removing any material from the pin.

Your correct Andy, and it's very easy.I've re-motored a 999 with the double reduction to be able to run across Lionel switches.

Charlie just be real careful when squeezing the tab on the wheel, sorta work it around very gentle ,then be real careful when you tap it down.I used a small flat brass punch just a little larger than the tab to tap it back down with a small machinist hammer ,but remember be careful or you'll ruin the tab by breaking a piece of it off.
