How to remove "elephant ears" on 6-11221 Union Pacific #3983 4-6-6-4 Challenger | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

My grandson asked if I could remove the Smoke Deflectors on the my (6-11221) Union Pacific #3983 4-6-6-4 Challenger "3983" (Grey/Yellow –(Oil Fired) Vision Line (2010). I couldn't. Has anyone removed these, and if so how? There is piping that prevents removing one of two screws holding the Deflectors on the shell. It's not obvious to me how to get to that screw. I've owned it for over 11 years, never thought to remove them...from the mouths of babes!
