With much help from OGR members I have successfully downloaded Railmodeller software.  I am in the beginning stages of creating a new track plan and would like some feedback.  I am stuck on how to transpose my layout plan to the OGR forum for viewing.  Right now I have a plan saved on my desktop from the Railmodeller program but can't seem to bring it up as an attachment on OGR forum or on as an e mail attachment.  Any suggestions would be helpful.

Harleylito,

It's easy. From the RailMoldeler app select "File" from the menu selection, then "Export as Image". This will prompt you to select a size to export. The program then will save it as an ".png" image (portable network graphics image) in the folder you designate.

Here is example of mine exported at 20%

Paul,

While I have absolutely no experience with this program, I offer just a few suggestions, one of which is obviously too late.

1. Before attempting any action on a file created by a program you are unfamiliar with, always make a copy of that file and put it somewhere else on your hard drive.  You can create a folder you call Backup, Temp, Emergency or whatever you choose, so long as you remember its purpose is to protect your data from accidental mistakes while experimenting with a program.

2. In my experience, programs that "export" files in differing formats create a "new copy" of the existing file before the conversion, leaving you with two files, one original and one converted, and usually in the same location. Some will ask you if you want to replace the existing file with the converted file, and if you say "OK," your original file is gone. Thus, the reason for suggestion #1.  If neither of these things occurred as you "converted," then I would not consider the program well-behaved and just be even more cautious.

3. There is also the chance the program saved your pre-conversion file to another location on the hard drive.  Try starting the program and doing a system-wide search for its data files to see if it's located anywhere else.

Good luck,

Chuck

Any suggestions??  I have the feeling that I lost it when it became a "png" image - will have to start over I assume.

Hello Harleylito,

I was assuming that you wanted to share your track plans with friends via an image.

The png file is a bitmap image file (you cannot work it as a rail file) and you can upload the file first, then attach to the current post.

If you want to send the actual worksheet of the track plans to share here in the forums, then it would be limited for those that actually have the RailModeler application. From what I have seen most railroad software applications do not talk to each other when it comes to the file format that it saves the track-plan file to.

.

To answer the question of saving the worksheet. When you save your plan, make notice on where the save window is directed at, of course you have the option to save where you like.

When you come back to the app, on the top left corner you will see a blue folder. Clicking this will bring you to the folder where you saved the file (on first time, you may have to navigate there, but after that it will remember).

Another option is using the preferences. Top menu click "RailModeler" then "preferences" you will see a tree on the left, click on the "various" category. At this option you can click the checkbox to "open most recent worksheet at startup" box. This is self explanatory.

Hope this helps

Thanx again chuck

Harleylito,

To find a file in MAC OS X, press the "command key + spacebar" at the same time. This will open up the finder bar (top right corner of screen), from there type in the name that you used when saving the file then hit enter. Finder will show any file that is named what you typed, highlight the selection and right click (command click if using a MAC mouse) and select "open enclosing folder" this will bring you to the folder where you saved the file.

.

In the event that the Finder does not work, there is an app that works really good. I have been using it for years, it is called "Easy Find" and you can download it from the "App Store" for free. The app will look in every nook and cranny of the hard drive and show the path where the file lives.
