how would one go about using 3-rail flex track along with traditional Lionel tubular track. I think it would be much easier to make necessary curves then to try to finagle fixed curve track into the desired arc.

There are pins of which half the length fits tubular track and half the length fits Gargraves and Ross track. I think they come a dozen to a packet. If the height of the ties are different, you may need a shim under the Gargraves of Ross track. John
Gargraves on top of cork roadbed matches the height of tubular O track.
The larger circles of tubular are flexible to a degree. You can make a circle using 15 vs. 16 sections for a smaller circle.
Interesting topic. What is the tightest dimension of a curve you can get with mating 027 or 031 to flex track?
