I am planning a train layout that is 5 1/2' x 9 1/2'. But, I need someone to build the table. Table should be in 2 pieces so it is easy to move if need be. Also, the table top will be in several sections that will screw down to the base for easy removal.

Is there anyone that you know of in the southeast PA or Maryland that does such work?  Seriously interested. Table can be built anywhere and delivered later. Ready to go for the right price.

Another option is Mianne Benchwork, they have a standard beginner size 6ft X 10Ft  Model ST-6X10   Click on the underline phrases to link.  You would still have to add a plywood deck.

If your exact size has to be 5' 6" X 9'6" work with the next smaller size and over hang the plywood 3" on each side.

Model ST-5X9

Two sheets of plywood Cut 5'6" X 4 ft.

One sheet cut 5'6" X 1'6" to be installed in the middle of the two larger sheets.

This part could be done as (two) scrap pieces from the remainder of the two full sheets cut. Standard plywood sheets are 4'X8'. Most Home Depots or Lowes would do this cutting for you. Local upscale lumber yards would definitely do this cutting for you.

Plywood would be screwed to the Mianne benchwork.

Good luck with your project.

I will 2nd the Mianne bench work recommendation. It is very nice, very light weight, very easy to assemble and very versatile. I started with a 6'x16' table from Mianne, it took just a few hours to assemble and it was ready for plywood. Went to Home Depot and had them cut 1/2" plywood into sizes I could manage. That took another hour or so to install. mianne supplies everything you need but the plywood for the top. Each leg has a leveling foot. You can easily assemble everything with a screw driver.

As an added bonus, if you ever want to re-configure or add on to your existing bench work, that is very easy to do. By ordering some more parts, which they will help you with, you can re-configure, add on to, or even add shelves above or below your current bench work.

On my first order of the 6'x16' table, I had them make my it with the idea of adding shelves under the layout. They did that at no additional charge. A couple months later I ordered the pieces to finish off the shelves. After that I ordered their transformer cart on wheels and that is also a very nice addition. To say the least, I am very pleased with it and also with the company that makes it. It really is easy.

While I can't say for certain, I would imagine it will also be less expensive and much more versatile than hiring someone to make it all for you?

Redman440, That is a most generous offer. Of course, I can come to pick it up. I would like to know if it would fit in my Odyessy mini-van. Is this table one that has access underneath for wiring, etc? Please tell me more. I would love to come and see it and any other items you may have for sale. Thanks.

Just go to Lowes or Home Depot or the like, and buy 3 slab hollow-core doors.

A 30" wide and a 36" will give you a 5 1/2 foot wide top, 80 inches long.

Add a 24 " wide door to get to 104 inches, near 9 1/2 feet long.

Set on sawhorses or folding tables for legs.

Use screws and metal plates to bolt together, and you have a train table.

athayer,

It could be set up as a set of modular pieces that connect to make your 6' x 10' layout.

Do you have a track plan in mind yet?  Asking because a few inches one way or another could make a difference when you get to putting down the track.

Also, what's the biggest single piece that fits in you Odyssey, or put another way, what the size of the space in an Odyssey?

Was going to send an email, but yours is not listed in your profile.  Probably a good idea to add it.

Fold your seats down and measure the inside with the doors closed. You will need 48" wide and 72-84" from the rear hatch to the front most point. Also, measure the height of the hatch opening in case you have to stand them on edge to protect any scenery items. You would need the same 48" or slightly less on an angle.

Do you want a furniture look on just need a table for trains?

There are a lot of good ideas that have been presented that will save you money for track and trains.

if you click on Reman440's forum name you will go to his profile and you can find his email to contact him privately.
