Hi To All

I want to build a mobile control center.  Don't laugh yet.

I want any and all comments and criticisms.  You won’t hurt my feelings if you think it’s a silly idea.

Open the .jpg file above so you can see a rough of what I want to do.

Here's what I envision.

The back center board will be about 30" wide at the bottom of the board and about 38" wide at the top.

The two side boards will be about 20" wide at both top and bottom.

All 3 boards will be about 12" high.

All 3 will lean back at about a 45 degree angle so that I will be able to see the layout no matter where I move the center to.  I will be seated in a chair with wheels so I can move the chair and center wherever I want to be.

There will be mini toggle and push button switches on the boards to handle all the turnouts intergraded into the diagram of the layout for that table.

Below the diagrams will be more switches.

On the table there will be all the switches needed to run the rest of the layout and 2 transformers.

The 2 side shelves will be for additional transformers or switches.

Underneath I will build a small shelf towards the back of the table for transformers that will be set to permanent voltages and any TMCC controllers that will be needed.

I plan to screw a solid back board over the wire connections on the back of all 3 boards to keep the whole thing looking neat. I say screw, because when I need to get to the back of the boards, I will remove 8 screws and do whatever work that needs to be done.

The wires will run down and out the bottom and then all wires will be tied together to form one cord.  The 3 cords will then come together at the back center and will be put in a "Corrugated Wire Loom".  The same stuff you see under the hood of a car.  That Loom will be 12' long so then I will be able to scoot up and down the 25' lengths of both tables (I will have a 4’ space between the 2  25’ tables for me to have room to control both tables and the second level over one table).

I will also be running the layout with my TMCC Cab1 remote system, my Legacy remote, and my DCS remote.  I just want the fun of running the conventional way like I did when I was a kid.  Working those levers on the old ZW250 is a memory I can’t forget and want to renew that good feeling.

I plan on building the whole thing out of cardboard first.  Mock it up complete before trying to build it. That way I will be able to make any corrections in cardboard instead of wasting wood.

What do you think ?  Please don’t hold back.  We may all get a good laugh out of this.

Hi  Ted,

I have 3 tables.  One is 26' x 10' - one is 25' x 8" - and a second tier that is 25' x 8'.

I have a 15 1/2" laptop.  I don't think I would be able to get the 3 diagrams on one screen.  And if I did, I would need a microscope to see the detail.

What might work in your line of doing things, is if I had a very large touch screen that had special software that would somehow, via WiFi, transmit the signals from the laptop to some kind of receiver on the layout, therefore eliminating wires from the control center to the tables.  That would be a great idea, but way over my head.

Wouldn't I still have to have wires running to the tables ?

Not a problem.  You can use multiple screens on a PC.

And you can use the zoom feature on a tablet to make details more visible.  The tablet here is showing the top right corner of the left screen above.

Or zoom way in to make things way, way more visible.

WiFi can greatly reduce the amount of wiring needed.  If you are interested I would suggest talking to Barry Broskowitz and my brother Dave Hikel.  They will both be at York.  Dave has supplied Barry with the harware package that Barry is using for computer control of his layout.  You can read more on the threads below.

Toshiba and others sell USB monitors.  You cannot show high speed graphics or video on them but they are perfect for this type of fairly static application.  Add a usb hub and you can connect up to 6 monitors.  There are also usb converters you can add to regular VGA monitors with the same result.  Also the monitors fold up to the size of a laptop and are very portable.

Mine will only allow 2.

My laptop is an older version running Windows XP Pro.  Would I need to buy a new laptop running Windows 7 or 8 ?  My laptop will not run the later operating systems.
