I’m looking for ways to store engines on the layout so they are easy to access and change out for different trains. Right now they get buried in the yard or a passing track. And it’s too hard to move all the engines to get the one I want.

Carvana auto dispenser idea.
Out in a coin out comes your engine, my son bought a car thru them... "way cool idea"
I also always thought something like a “Berg rotating display case” could be rigged to run engines on and off if hidden below a service building. It could be fun to drive one in, select a tray number, and drive another on out. It would certainly solve storage issues and be a heck of a conversation piece.

I like the roundhouse/turntable idea; maybe a transfer table/storage tracks. Another possibility is an under table storage/staging yard.

I have always wanted a turn table and roundhouse but never had the room. With my layout where I live now I have a wall of shelves right across from a long straight where I can access most engines easily. Not a round house but convenient. Plus they are on display when not in use.

Interesting idea but will the Case Mechanism take the weight of the locomotives and track loaded onto it?

I don’t know. It wouldn’t have to the case exactly, it’s more demonstration of concept. Iron Horse Hobby Haus in downtown Reading PA has had one as long as I can remember. They use it to display N and HO locomotives.
I had thought of a transfer table but I love old roundhouses. I thought of making a smallish 3 stall roundhouse but most of my steamers are the bigger ones and you start figuring all the tracks needed just a lot of space. But never say never !! I have an open area for access in the middle of my layout and I keep looking. It would not be for big time storage though. I like the shelves. They are right there.
I previously installed a Lionel Transfer Table with its extension, but the table movement was erratic; probably because the electrical contacts didn't make reliable, firm contact with the energizing rails. The Millhouse Transfer Table appears to be "industrial strength" and may be more reliable in operation. How do I contact Millhouse for more info?
