I found this HO yard structure from GC Laser
I see and understand the fuel oil tank, but what are the steps for? What would be stored in the shed at the top of the steps? It looks cool and I may try to scratch build it once I understand what it was used for.

Very cool. Perhaps the steps enabled work to occur from above, such as for washing? I saw an old documentary where they used a structure like that to wash locos before the automatics came along. I am sure someone will know. Looks like a great project either way. Good luck with it.
A very interesting structure. I like it a lot. Put a caboose alongside it and it is clear what it is and does, but without that . . .
Yes, in O gauge/scale, if you want it, you have to plagiarize it from HO. Charge on and build it. Interesting that similar but different structures are shown above, so these must not be that unusual, although I don't remember seeing one, or a photo of one in books or mags.
Looks like an attention getter at the edge of the layout (without a nearby caboose)...
