Just curious what builder? FM Models? Sam Model Tech? My guess would be FM.

Same way you recognize a person. The features/shapes are a bit different. In particular, the area around and including the headlight and the shape of the pilots, and most notably the coupler doors. It's not so much the different runs as what builder did them. That said, they are hand made and the models within a run do vary.
