Posting this layout design information here, in the tinplate-loop runners-acceptable domain. Figured some of the folks here could appreciate and give some feedback to a tinplated who is interested in cradling a toy train layout, but with just a touch of modeling and scene making. Consider my influences somewhere between RJ's excellent small space display and Tom Snyder's classic layout.

Size will be 15 x 6.5. Viewable on three sides, with the back side against a painted backdrop.

Lower level will have two lines. The inside one which is more geared towards early pre-war with lots of accessories and 022 switches offering sidings and reverse loops. Outside line will be for my larger tinplate. 263 work train, 260-700 series passenger train, etc.

Upper level is just a loop that will use my re-issue Hellgate Bridge. Mostly smaller, 027 tinplate here. Will wire with relays so I can run 2 trains to automatically cause stops and keep the two separated. Think 1700 streamliners or Marx.

The two plans.

A. makes more of the upper level. Hiding more of the lower level, will also allow me space to model a quarry (grew up hanging out at these swimming holes, one of which had a bridge across one end.

B. diminishes the top layer a bit, giving more visual space to the lower level. I'd eliminate the quarry feature from the track plan, though maybe put it into the backdrop, and I still intend to give the layout the title- The Granite Rail.

Both plans look like they could make for a fabulous layout. The first one would emphasize the larger features - bridges, rivers, the quarry, buildings - with space for a few smaller scenes mixed in. The second would provide more space for people, street scenes, vehicles, etc. Personally, I have more interest in the former than the latter and would go with the first, just because I'd be more enthusiastic about working on it. But that's just me. Either one could be terrific depending on your interest and skills.

I like A better. Would go with less water on lower level. Lose the water on the upper level and have the bridge go over a low spot in the terrain.

The independent outer loop I would hide the back part and only show this loop in front or put a hidden siding in the back and run 2 trains alternating.
