Thanks to Moonman and others for their help with my track plan toward the end of last year. The layout is now at a point where I am ready to start ballasting and scenery work, along with working on 6 kits I have purchased. This is an around the walls plan, except there is only one wall, as you will see from the photos. The layout takes up half of the loft above our great room. (Good track needed because it is a long way down!)

The trackage proceeded very close to plan with some minor adjustments. My space is almost 12' by a bit over 15'. The plan is an oval with 096 curves, two staging tracks, a small yard, and a branch line to an industrial area. The 096 was a must for running my N&W steam-Y3, A, and J. I plan to have a train running on the loop while switching in and out of the industrial area.

I used Ross track, switches, and roadbed and am very happy with these products. I like the looks and my trains are running well on this track. I did have to buy a small amount of Gargraves to accommodate some plan changes. My "Local" HS (very nice, but 70 miles away) carries Gargraves, but not Ross. I decided to try the Woodland Scenics risers to give some extra interest to the oval. I like the way this turned out and the risers were very easy to work with.

I am happy to answer any questions about progress to date. I will be putting together some items to sell as my interests evolved over the last few years and I have several things that no longer fit my current ideas.

George,

Here's the final track plan that I followed. A couple of changes were made during track work:

  1. For the staging tracks at the bottom, the switch was moved to be right off the main oval and changed to a curved switch, 072/054. This made it possible to lengthen the staging tracks significantly. For example, right now I have a coal train on the 072 track consisting of an N&W Y3, 10 hoppers, and a caboose. Considering the size of the layout, that's about as long a train as I should be running so the staging tracks are fulfilling their purpose. Also, the 054 staging track comfortably holds my MTH Crescent Limited train.
  2. I changed the industry track at the bottom by putting in an S-curve and lengthening it a bit. It makes a nice visual now when switching that area. I know S-curves are to be avoided, but in a slow speed industry situation I saw no reason not to use one. I have switched that area, at slow speed, with no problem.

If the words didn't make the changes clear let me know and I will take a couple of overhead photos to illustrate.
