A while back I was looking for ways to keep the dust down in my layout room, I decided to try some wood shop air filtration systems. I installed them in march hanging them under the layout tables. I run them 24 hours a day but timers would work fine. I changed the filters this weekend and after 4 month both filters were about 1/2 pound heavier. That is a half a pound of dust that is not on my layout or on my trains. This system works very well if you can afford the cost. I paid $350 each for 2 and have one at each end of my layout cleaning air in a 58 by 15 room. If you are looking for a way to keep the dust down in your layout room I would recommend this. Several mfg make them like Delta, Jet and Rockler.

Great idea! But in the Summer my WHOLE layout is one big dust collector (honey dew list and all...)
I also have to worry about the humidity here in Michigan. I run two dehumidifiers and have to empty them almost daily. However, as an added benefit, the condensers seem to collect a fair share of dust along with the moisture.
And you have a 58 x 15 room? Wow! Very cool!

I was a bit apprehensive about $700 and being unsure it would really work but it actually works very well. I have about 400 feet of display shelves on the walls and there is very little dust accumulation on the trains. I only say very little because some of them had dust on them before i put them on the shelves
I try to keep the table saw and wood cutting tools out of the layout room, however the dust will return, its just a matter of time.
A drop ceiling was the biggest improvement, secondly was painting the concrete floor.
Next I updated the Air Cleaner in the furnace; to an electronic air cleaner.
I still have dust, but its just not as much...
Thanks for the idea, I will have to look into one.
BTW, where did you purchase yours at?
Ive got dogs and I would get rid of the trains before I get rid of the pooches so there will always be more than the usual amount of dust plus I have in floor heating so the forced air filtration needed to be added.
How much noise do they make? Do you have an idea of their power consumption
They are a little on the noisy side especially since I run them both at full blast all the time except when Im in the room but no louder than the furnace, they have remotes so you can turn them on and off pretty easy. They draw about 5 amps each
Didn't we have a guy on the forum make a dust fan out of a plain furnace filter and a floor fan? As I remember it turned out to be quite effective at a low cost. Thought's?
I understand there are plenty of guys out there who have all kinds of time to spend on building contraptions and gadgets. Now while I fully posses the ability and know how to build my own dust systems I do not have the time. I am not the only guy who doesnt have time and there are plenty of people out there who dont know how to do that stuff. I offer the knowledge I gained from my solution so that people who cant just build their own aren't intimidated by spending hundreds of dollars on a solution that may not work. I bought my air cleaners in September of last year and didnt get time to install them until march and it only took me 4 hours to do them both
