I am in the planning stages of my layout. The layout will be in an L shape (basicly two 4x8's in a L) pushed into a corner of my basement on a tiled concrete floor. I would like to put the layout on rollers so I can pull it away from the walls for access to laying track and later derailments. Any thoughts?

I would recommend it. My layout is a modular "stack" of loops. I leave the back of each level open for access. Basically a 8x10 table on 8 legs with swivel wheels. Makes moving it/maint/working on it very easy.
Menards has 2 1/2" swivels with rubber wheels for a couple bucks each.
Thanks for the reply. I was hopeful someone else thought this might work. I am also planning on leaving the back open (the mountain in the corner) for access. I will check out Menards for the wheels.
Garry,
Here's a thread about someone that's done this recently:

I think it's a great idea, keep us posted.

Garry,
Rich (Rich883) used small dollies to move his layout. You may look at his approach, here:

I'd consider getting wheels that are lockable.
I was going to use wheels on my two 4x8 tables, but my floor is vinyl and I just stuck some 1"x3" felt pads under my legs and they don't move unless I want them to.
I did the same on my layout. It is only 4x8, and I used one fixed pair of wheels and one pair of swivel. This makes it easier for me to move it by myself. I did get the locking wheels, but dont use it since my layout is on carpet (cant roll away).
Garry,
Here's a photo of the casters I mounted on my layout legs. Originally, I had casters that screwed into mounts pounded into the bottoms of the legs, but the mounts worked loose. So then I added angle brackets and bolted the casters to the brackets. Might be overkill, but no more problems. The first layout was made up of 4'x8' tables, then later added 2' sections to the others to make a 6'x16' solid table.

Alex,
I noticed your table leg design when I was following another thread and decided to use the your leg desgin to support the table layout on the legs verus the screws. Great idea..
