to make an O72 loop requires 16 pieces I believe. If I alternate O72 and straight pieces can I get by with less O72? Or is that a stupid question and I will just have a bigger loop? This is fastrack if that matters.

Fastrack O72--16 sections to a circle (#12041). One section makes a 22.5 degree turn. If you add straight track(s) to your 072 diameter circle you will take up more space.
Yeah. I see now as I just tried it with O36. Creates bigger loop. Stupid question by me like I surmised initially. Lol. But I thought I read somewhere about that. Oh well

If you have the space by all means go for it. The straights added to any loop will allow you to let your trains stretch out.

A circle is always a circle! Anything less than 16 pieces of 072 will not close the loop. Straights optional. Sectional track geometry 101.
