I became interested in modeling the Rutland a few years ago. They only owned 1 outside braced boxcar. Difference was from what was available. The car ends were wood rather than steel. I decided to scratchbuild one from wood. I did use a existing Atlas chassis and a few commercially made detail parts. It came out okay. I basically just eyeballed the few pictures I could find. It’s not going to win any contests. But I have a unique car for RR.
I have a few Atlas Pennsy X-26 single-sheathed, or outside braced, boxcars. These were part of the 1918 USRA program and the Pennsy received 9,900 of the total 25,000 cars built.
Here are some non-Pennsy boxcars I have.
I have a couple of Lionel MoW double-sheathed cars in the correct gray scheme for pre-1954 Pennsy. Unfortunately, the Pennsy never owned any double-sheathed boxcars as far as I can tell.
I have two Lionel non-Pennsy double-sheathed boxcars, but the paint schemes on them were gone by my layout's late 40s era. The Santa Fe had a large fleet of the USRA cars.
The date on the SSW car indicates it was not part of the original USRA order but a clone.
@metalman that's awesome!
Good Evening Everyone,
Here is a Lionel double sheathed boxcar that started out as a Great Northern. I stripped and repainted it using Tamiya spray paint. I printed my own decals except for the data sets which are Tichy. I enjoy doing custom cars that have a local connection to my area and would be from the 50's on back.
Some Atlas cars that have been kit bashed. D&H Cement cars. Detail items from AlanRail on the Forum. Tichy decals.
This is an Atlas car converted to a door and a half. Parts from Atlas, Precision Scale door stops and some Evergreen styrene. Decals from K4.
