My track plan is 10.5 x 18 now, an around the wall style.  I originally wanted a duck under set at 48" tall.  I also wanted a second tier or level to be added in.  I have not started my bench work as the second level is integral to the bench work.  Build the bench work with the second level in mind for later development.

What I want, I cannot get, well not entirely.

My compromise is a lower 40" height, then this will allow for the second level.  A few inches makes a difference.  I have the electrical panel in my way

Now that the table height is shorter, I cannot do a duck under, but I can do a 'lift out section'.

I have read a number of threads about this, but none of them show pictures of how the two ends meet together?

Do I cut the pins in the fastrack?  How does it get power?  I saw something about giving the lift out section power... but I am still stuck on how the pieces fit.

Looking for help,

Bryan

Bryan, the pins in Fastrack are solid and will prove hard to easily cut. They can be removed completely, just look underneath and you will see what needs to be done. To cut your Fastrack section to custom fit, use a Dremel and be careful to cut accurately, so measure and mark out very carefully and recheck measurements. You can power up the lift out section with a flexible cable with a suitable plug and socket. I recall Jim Barrett has a great "how to"  for a hinged section in one of the past issues of OGR, perhaps Jim himself, or Allan Miller can direct you to the exact issue.

HI,me and  my dad built a layout like the one your planing on building and what we did is we got a real thick board and we added a 1x2 down the center at the end on the 1x2's we put metal plates and hucked up the wires to it from the track , on the frame of the layout we made a u shape pocket so that the 1x2 would be a little snug, on the inside of that u shape we added plates that connected to the powered lines before the lift out to make the power connection.

as fare as the track go's make the track on the lift out a little bit longer then the lift out so that the track over laps and cut the track flat so you don't have a gap were the pins use to be,you can use a dremel tool or get a cheap plastic miter box at lowe's and a hack saw and cut the track so they can be flush and have no gaps in the rail's

Use the "search" function for the term "lift section" here on the forum and you will find some interesting solutions. Click here for search results. Hinged to lift up, drop down and swing on a hinge with wheels on the legs are the top methods.

The track does not have to connect. The rails need to be very close. Various ways to do that with FasTrack. Just attach a power drop to the lift section of rail. You can cut a piece of FasTrack in the center as the transition piece. Then you can adjust the length as needed. (See end appendix of Modular FastTrack manual)
