Lionel 1957 Showroom layout

There has been extensive coverage on the track plan details of the 16' x 32' 1957 showroom layout in another non-OGR publication.   A Google search should bring it up, as well as a re-creation that was done by a well known "O" modeler/layout builder that had a custom double crossover made for use on his version.

Here is the track brake down taken from CCT article October 2010.

78 straights,16 half straights, 4 custom cut straights,28 curves,7 half curves,5 right hand switch,3 left hand switch. I hope that helps.

It is 2 -5x9 boards.

There is an error in the drawing just above the truss bridge over the river - the curved tunnel apparently did not extend enclosed over the red line as pictured.

Steve Garofalo was the one who built a modern 13 x 30-foot version with the double crossover.

That's not the showroom layout that I remember on the 2nd floor of Lionel on 26th St.  I do remember the turntable with a white diesel switcher & I recall there are some photos in the Lionel paperback Model Railroading.

Unfortunately the Super-O track system had only one curve radii available.

Fortunately, it's east to re-bend Super "O" to any desired radius if you want to make adaptations.

It is the 32'X16' that I am looking at. The more I think about the less an exact copy becomes.

Real water is definitely out, too much maintenance. The layout could go days without being run so fake water is the plan.

I need wide radius curves for larger steam engines. This and the question of coming up with enough Super-O is driving me to Fastrack although Gargraves is on the list of possibilities.

This layout features a lot of custom buildings. I plan to use more accessories instead.
