I recently purchased a prewar Lionel 249 set. It contains a 248 engine, a 831D flat car and an 807 caboose. It appears that the set is missing at least one car. What was the contents of this set?

It sounds complete to me. Many 248 sets only had 1 car (usually a flat car with lumber load) and a caboose.
The set appeared in the 1930 catalog and only included the flat car and caboose. It sold for $7.00.

I have never seen the original Lionel 249 one car set, however ron m points out in another thread, the original Lionel 249E train set, came with a complete 2600 consist. I have seen a couple of these 249-249E trains sets in the late 50's, early 60's and thought they were 264's until just recently. Evidently this was a Lionel 249-249E promotional set 6631EX.
Seafoid please post a picture of your 249 Train set, I would like to see the engine and Tender on that 248 Train set.

My 249 locomotive isn't running , it hums not moving ? I will check to see what all came with the set . I got mine on ebay bout two years back .
