I'm working on building an engine service facility and want to know if I have room for a 072 wye switch for two tracks. I have around 8 1/2 inches to play with in this section, will a wye switch fit?

Looks like about 8 inches will do. The curved sections coming off the wye heading to the sidings are 6-12055.

I used the Wye 072 for all of my ladders and sidings, they work great, if you need switches, I have a few cases left of the wye's from building my layout.

Can a Lionel 072 fastrack wye be used with 084 curves?
The simple answer is "sure." There are plenty of topics here about mixing curve sizes, if that's what you are worried about. However, the most important question to answer is "Do I have any equipment or any other reason not to run curves less than O84?"
