I've had my eye on doing the same thing for my #8444, but Lionel's parts website shows the following for #844:

I would imagine they're glued with some adhesive. I'm kinda' partial to Walther's Goo applied very sparingly for this kind of task.

I believe he's referring to the special "Lionel Lines" name plates that were xtra in one of the models. It was made to be added if one wanted to mimic the 844 as she appeared during an excursion for the LCCA convention I believe. They were magnetic of some kind. They would magnetically stick over the "Union Pacific" lettering.

Correct. I remember reading in the catalog about the "added" magnetic "LIONEL LINES" sign for the 2010 LCCA trip with UP 844, from Denver back to Cheyenne. I must admit that I did wonder how the "magnetic sign" would actually adhere to a die cast tender.
I suspect if they're magnetic, they may have had a steel strip inside the tender to give the magnets something to attract.

Exactly. Unfortunately, as of yet, there are no "exploded parts diagrams" for the newest tenders. That would probably clarify the question, absent of course somebody from Lionel who just knows the answer and lets us know here. That would be ideal, but it doesn't always happen.
FWIF, it's also unclear if the p/n mentioned in my earlier post is just the Lionel Lines sign, or if it's a "kit" that includes an internal magnet (or metal strip as GRJ mentioned) that can be placed inside the tender to hold the Lionel Lines magnetic sign that's placed outside the tender. Regardless... that p/n is showing UNAVAILABLE. Not sure if that means EVER or just temporarily. (Although from the OP's comment above, he clearly received the Lionel Lines sign(s) from somebody.)

At $10 I wouldn't be surprised if that is just 1 sign. I suspect you'd have to order 2 to cover both sides of your tender. And then the strip for mounting extra. That's just a guess.
OK let's try this a different way. Would a member who actually has the #844 with the Lionel Lines sign hold up a piece of steel to the side of the tender see if it is magnatic? If someone has actually opened a tender describe, or show a picture on how Lionel mounted magnets to the tender body. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Bruce

He is referring to me....and you're welcome Bruce. The signs are magnetic so I would imagine that there is a plate in the tender but I have not opened my tender up to check as of yet.
Whatever is in the tender magnets or magnetic plate, is only about 3/4 of the way across the "Union Pacific" lettering. I took the plate and touched the end to the tender and it didn't stick at the UN or IC so my guess is a couple magnets glued to the inside during assembly of the 844.
Making a couple plates would be very easy with some decals and a few super magnets. $10 plus $9 shipping from Lionel and they are not available anyway.
That's interesting, I'm going to have to check mine and see if it's the same. I'm sure it is but I'm curious now.
