This is my first post, so hello everyone who decided to read this relatively new post written by a guy who is considered "inexperienced" in the model railroading world!

When Lionel introduced the new 2018 Big Book V1 Catalog, there were some unique items in there that caught my eye. The three most notable items include:

  • #84719 Santa Fe Lionchief Super Chief Passenger Set
  • #84723 BNSF Lionchief Tier 4 Freight Set (Is there any new information on this? I would really like to see an actual product picture and not catalog art)
  • #84772 Norfolk & Western Hopper 6 Pack

I managed to receive both the Santa Fe Set and the N&W Hoppers for Christmas this year, and I am very pleased with the end results of both products. I figured I'd share my pictures of the new 6-Pack, because from what I know there are no posts here featuring the new Hopper 6-Packs.

The Norfolk & Western was called "King Coal" for a reason, and these 6 Hoppers will help uphold that title even though the N&W is now NS. Lionel's Newest 6-Packs are designed to be sold at Hobbystores as "Breakup" items. You buy one of these 20$ or 25$ freight cars as a cheap, but realistic add-on to one's starter set. I have two of these "Breakup" cars myself, the #84455-4 MKT Flatcar and the #84458-4 New York Central Gondola, but after I saw the image of the N&W Hoppers I knew I had to get the whole enchilada.

On a bit of personal opinion, you do NOT separate Norfolk & Western hoppers. You either get the whole hopper set, or don't get it at all.

These hoppers are Lionel's first 6-Pack of hoppers, differing from the other roadnames of Pennsylvania, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern and Peabody/Rock Island. To the inexperienced railroader, having 6 cars with the same design looks a bit boring. However, the actual history is that hoppers were painted like that to grab people's attention and let them know "Hey, thats a coal-hauling railroad".

The N&W Hopper 6-Pack features 6 hoppers in 6 different road numbers (145346, 145504, 145577, 145622, 145639 and 145686 in chronological order) and features plastic bodies with new die-cast trucks. I am...still debating on whether I like the new trucks, because they have a realistic appearance but are not sprung and appear to be wider than the actual car body at certain angles. There are also no coal loads for the hoppers, a little sad but the molded loads that Lionel will sometimes add are hard to remove anyways.

All 6 (4 shown) of the hoppers on my at-the-time-being-disassembled Christmas layout.

The First image I had of the hoppers upon opening the box.

Comparing one of the new N&W hoppers to another standard Lionel hopper, in this case the #82072 Philadelphia Quartz Hopper from 2015.

Up close details of the trucks. On the left is the Standard Lionel Hopper, while the one on the right is the one from the N&W 6-Pack. While I do like the new design, I feel as though the truck looks a little too big for its size and looks to be far too wide than the hopper at certain angles. However, it is sturdy and far more durable than the plastic trucks seen on most starter sets and freight cars

PROS

  • Realistic Design
  • Crisp Graphics
  • Sturdy Trucks and Couplers
  • Nice look when behind a train whether it be one car or the whole set

CONS

  • No Coal Loads
  • Plastic Car Body
  • Trucks are not sprung
  • Trucks look a bit too bulgy, but thats me

On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give this 6-Pack a Solid 9. The Lionel Hopper 6-Pack is ready to run on anyone's layout. With a reasonable break-up price and reasonable all-together price, realistic graphics and the amount of cars will for an impressive looking add-on to anyone's train set. It will look nice in any starter set, and it will look nice when all coupled together to make some long coal trains.

Make your own coal load.

Take some 1" cushion foam, cut to size of just below the hopper opening, spray paint the foam on one side with flat black krylon- no need to over do it.

After its dry,  coat that painted side in white glue or wood glue, dont over do it.  Sprinkle on some "coal" (black aquarium gravel (Walmart), let it dry

Dilute more glue with a little water, add little more gravel. Let it completely dry.

If you are not satisfied with the color you can lightly spray un evenly with a gloss krylon black.

When all has COMPLETELY dried drop into your hopper opening. If you want more realism, sprinkle in some more DRY  (no more glue) aquarium "coal".

OR you can probably buy plastic coal loads from your LHS

As much as I would like to make coal-loads, im still a beginner model railroader. I don't have spray paint, I dont have foam and I am STAYING AWAY from sharp and pointy objects. As for coal loads, my local hobby-shop does have loose coal but im not sure how much will fit in one hopper, and plus I don't have any re-useable bag to store them all ^^;

I think the MTH Premiere N&W 70 ton Hoppers blow these away.Perfect scale sized, realistic coal loads, die-cast sprung trucks and die cast operating couplers. I bought 3 sets slightly used from a forum member for 325 bucks shipped. Thats a coal drag. Just saying. Nick

I agree, however I must say this: I am NOT a scale railroader. Sure, the 70T MTH Premier Hoppers will be leagues better than my Lionel 6-Pack in terms of quality and detail, but to me theres more charm and play value in a toy train (as in the #84772 Hoppers) rather than a scale train (Your MTH Hoppers).

But then again, thats me
