Does a Superchief Plus engine, running on conventional AC control, run any more smoothly at lower speeds, than say a late Postwar Lionel 220 Alco engine? Not sure if the big draw of the Superchief Plus locomotives is the remote control system and bells and whistles, or whether the motors inside are a big improvement over late postwar units and run significantly better.

No, I am only talking about the regular LionChief Plus. I am not really that interested in using the Remote control feature, or the extra module features etc. I like operating from my transformer throttle.
I am just wondering whether a LionChief Plus engine is so superior to the locos of the late Postward era, or the Pullmors, that it operates nicely when you put the throttle up to six or eight volts, and is therefore worth the extra $125 or so that it would cost over, say, a Sante Fe Alco 220.

Yes they will because they have DC can motors. I have an LC+ Pacific and have run it in conventional to try it out. But I prefer using the remote.

Agreed. Generally, you're going to get much finer control translating to ability to run at slower speeds with Lion Chief Plus compared to PW. I run mostly all conventional but have a handful of LC+ locos and enjoy both. With LC+ you can really get them to crawl along, something I can't do with a PW loco and the handles on the ZW.
