Hi all! I have room ( well havent asked the girl yet) for a layout that is roughly 8 foot down one wall and 3 foot down another. I want to do something in this space and be able to use it  in a bigger layout. I would like it to be a small town but I can pull off city if I have to. I am thinking of doing a Gumstump plan to add a few more industries plus some operational interest.

I am planning on this being the Rock Island and Peoria line as it would look if it had stayed connected to Peoria and Milan Illinois. as for time frame? I am thinking early to late 50's maybe earlier. I will have steam and diesel on this layout. So who thinks this is doable? I figured with a transition era line I would have shorter cars and locomotives. Plus I deal with modern stuff daily so this would be more fun to run for me.

Suggestions? Have I lost my mind? BTW this will be in 2 rail scale and seeings I am new to this does anyone have a suggestion as to who to get cars and locos from? I am looking for Alco's for sure a RS1 and RS 2 would be great.

  Thanks in advance.

Rick,

The Gumstump and Snowshoe Railroad was a famous point-to-point design by Chuck Yungkurth, a frequent contributor to model railroad publications. This layout design is found in Kalmbach's layout books. Has always been one of my favorites.

It's a neat design with steep grades and tight clearances.

Thunder,

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with along these lines. Atlas is one of the major suppliers of 2-rail locos, rolling stock and track supplies these days.

OGR ran an article about 10 years ago with a 2 rail layout based on Gumstump.  Check the index.  The size however was 11.5 feet by 2 feet.  I suppose you could wrap around the wall a bit but the radius will be tight.  2 rail in a tight space will work if you limit the curves to less than 30 degrees with a tight radius and you keep the rolling stock and locos small.  For me that means Weaver or Atlas 40 ft boxcars and an  Atlas SW switcher.  Had to get rid of the Weaver RS-3, just did not fit properly.
