Does anyone use a spreadsheet to keep track of locomotives and rolling stock? I'm looking to make a roster. Not looking to reinvent the wheel perhaps you would be willing to share some ideas or a template in excel or something.

Woodland Scenics has one for free in the App Store. I got it on my iPad.
I do, but I'm a dinosaur still using Lotus 123. Never liked Excel, but I'm sure it's fine for this task. Even if you had Lotus, you probably wouldn't want mine anyway. Just pick the info you want to track, and make column headings. Then fill it in.

I use MS Word for my collection inventory. I run my list by product numbers and group Freight cars, Passenger cars, and Engines as sections of the entire document.

I started out using Train Minder. When that went belly up, I exported much of the data to a text file which I then edited and imported into Excel. I have attached a template of the spreadsheet (I did add some additional info, such as the engine type - TMCC/Legacy/Conventional, etc.). There is a master list (first tab) which then I copied and sorted by catalog number (I leave off the 6- on all Lionel stuff), and finally a tab sorted by location since I have stuff stored all over the house. I also sorted out just the various engines so I could create a list of all the TMCC/Legacy id's as well as any train numbers I created to make accessing the on my Cab2 easier. The final tab is a list of Route numbers for many of the Command Control switches on my layout. As you can see, the 2nd - 3rd tabs are just sorted versions of the first. I know there is a way to have them updated automatically when you update the first tab, but that is beyond my meager Excel capabilities!!!

I'm in the process of creating my inventory in excel. I'm thinking of having different "sheets" for locomotives, rolling stock, accessories, etc. in order to create graphs if I want.
Note that in excel you can sort by item no., manufacturer, etc. and also hide data if you want. I originally was going to use an access database, but decided to go with excel.
I use Dash Model Trains. You find your model and add it as something you own. You can also buy and sell on the site. It is much simpler that pen and paper or a spreadsheet. You can also create a wish list. If something isn't listed, they have a way to add it to their database. I hope they stay in business as long as I own my trains.
